I Need Pictures Of Your Pregnant Mares Bags!

16 posts in this topic

I got a job as a foal watcher at night...and they said look online and become accustomed with different sized bags of the mares. Because I have to do a bag check every shift before and after. And I can't find any pictures online!! Any help or any tips would be great! I've helped with a handful of deliveries...but they were all experienced at it. And my first two mares are maidens :/. Thanks in advance!

I'll help ya out, even though my mare wasn't maiden. Every mare is different though.

These were udder shots the night before she foaled.

A month before she foaled.

And this was 2 months before.

Just remember every mare is different and develops differently and at different times. If I had some pics from her first time, I'd post 'em for ya. Sadly her first one came to early and got stuck, so I didn't get any pics of her development to term.

I hope this helps you.

That does help a lot! Its just hard because what a medium bag to me could be a small to someone else...and these are expensive horses being born i don't want to mess up.

Basically go from what the mares udder looked like 'before' it started filling. Since my mare hadn't nursed before this baby her udder went back down to really small. Her udder, since she has nursed now, didn't go back down after I weaned Dude. So in other words, her udder reflects that of a maiden mare's udder (to a point).

Go by the size of the mare before, then as she gets bigger it will be bigger for her and not going by what others say the size is. :)

Glad I could help.

My Friesian mare gets a bag like a milk cow starting months before foaling. I can't find the rest of the pictures. This one was the day before foaling and actually doesn't show just how huge she was, but maybe it will help a bit:

BagW-1.jpg

She is very predictable. She gets that tiny bit of wax on only one teat the day before, every time.

Extrahannah-your mare's bags look HUGE! lol I wonder if any of the other mare's will get them that size. The maidens haven't gotten their bags yet...but one looks like her's is filling in and she's at the 320 day. Well a day after now lol sorry since i work nights i get days confused. Dazed and confused. lol

Cowgirlup-!! Your mare has the "milk freckles" that i was talking about!

Do all mare's get the yellowish wax before they foal?

You can really see how the bag filled up to the point of not having a crease in it anymore..just a little slot.

Hope that helps you ...she reallys didn't get a very saggy butt..

No not all mares get wax.....

here is my mare.... (she is a miniature...) but it shows you there is no wax never was... and just how fulll some little mares can get!.....

this is the day she foaled... probally around 4 hours before.....

CheyenneFeb20002.jpg

and what she looked like... she is a unusual mare... you cannot see any change in her hind end...

CheyenneFeb20001-1.jpg

and my paint mare that is pregnant is starting to develope a bag already!... and she isn't due till end of april/june 1st!

I think.....the biggest indicator for mares, is if you just slightly part the lips of her val.va if it is a dark rosie pink... foaling is for sure SOon... if it is a light pink (kinda like the gum color) foaling is still far away!!

That is really cool WOA, no one has ever told me that before.

I would upload the pics of my maiden, but she has no bag at all yet.

I agree when eli foaled the day of her vulva was very pink almost red and sure enough she foaled that evening. also her tail was loose i could put it over her back with no resistance.

Ok is it normal that diva (one of the maidens) is past the 320 day and has just started getting a tiny bag? Like her nipples have changed and that's it. Her tailhead has been loose since last week when i started foal watch...but i got to remember the thing about the vulva! I didn't know that! That's pretty cool!

I was lucky with Twinkie being text book...with the Belgian ...she went 356 days with Angel. She got a bag about day 3 weeks before she foaled and NEVER waxed or dripped milk..Like everyone has said..they are all different. Some go the 320 days and others go up to and over a year. WOA brought up the vulva..very important to watch it as well..

There is also the Ph test..I never did it though.

Awww, thanks Eskie! Me too! :winking:

Roman's - She does get HUGE! I'm telling you, that picture does not do any justice to just how big her bag gets. I'm going to look. I know I have pictures that show the size more accurately. She is fine with cleaning her bag until it starts to get big. Once it gets swollen she'll cow kick at you if you even look at it. So, I just clean it as well as I can before it gets big and then I just have to hope it stays clean enough. Can't say I blame her, it's got to be uber uncomfortable!
