Magnum Girl

What Do You Think?

18 posts in this topic

How much consideration from outsiders do you use when naming an animal? I, apparently, am horrible at naming girls.

It took as a month to name our filly because the (now ex) boyfriend and I couldn't agree. We had LOTS of help from outside sources, but ended up coming up with Roxy on out own. didn't get any complaints on it, but it took a whole month to come up with. lol

Then I got a pup in January, took about 2 days to decided on her name, Tinker. It's short for stinker, which is how we came up with it, but I also call her tinker bell too. apparently a lot of my friends and my parents hate this name... came up when my parents suggested she come live with them, but then said they'd HAVE to change her name.

So, I've put a deposit down on a show prospect pup, and of course, it's another girl. I pick her up in 3 weeks and am determined to have a name picked before then. Last night I thought of the name Vegas for her, kinda like all your dreams can come true type thing. Best friend and mom HATE it. So, I'm at a loss. Should I say screw them and name her what I want or should I keep searching. I of course, care for their opinions, otherwise I wouldn't have told them i was considering it, but still!

Or any other suggestions I guess? I already have a (in assorted species and sexes): Lilli, Whiskers, outlaw, cowboy, magnum, Lilly, Dixie, Charlie, tinker and buck. I like western-y names/brands (cinch, Levi, behlen) but can't think of anything girly. Any help guys? if I can't figure this out soon, you don't get any pictures of her :)

Edited: As far as the time/effort put into naming the animal, it depends. If it is a show animal, we spend a lot of time coming up with a name and fitting it into our themes (the goats have a different theme each year-- this year it is country song titles; the Great Pyrenees are named after virtues or whatever those things are-- Grace, Hope, Faith, Love, Honor, etc.; and other show crittes have similar themes). Sometimes we pick an arbitrary call name (Out of the Blu is "Nike," for example) and sometimes it's part of their registered/show name (Sunny South Image of Honor is called Honor).

If the animal isn't going to be shown, we simply look at it and name is the first thing that pops in our head. Thus "Phil" for the clean-up buck we used last fall. He'll end up in the freezer this fall, so it didn't much matter his name.

I would: ask the breeder for suggestions, as they usually have a plethora of fabulous names socked away or can at least get you started; wait until you get said pup and the right name usually happens; and ultimately, name the dog yourself.

Unless the name is absolutely inapropriate (no body parts, please), then no one can really say anything. Your dog, you name it.

You can always ask one or two or three name choices from them, and make the ultimate decision from those options.

I think it's your dog and you can name it WHATEVER you want. I like Tinker and I also like Vegas.

I also think it's odd that your friends/family seem to have such strong opinions on what you call YOUR dog. :rolleye0014:

You won't ever make everyone happy with a name, so maybe get their opinions if you want them, but in the end it's up to you and if you love a name, use it. :smileywavey:

I second this.

I do care what people think about things like that, even though it doesn't matter. (Maybe because I'm so judgmental of what others name theirs.) But it affects my decision. Of course, I also take MONTHS to name my critters. :ashamed0002:

I also feel this way (to an extent). Or maybe it's that they seem to be some dang vocal about it. I have strong opinions, too; that doesn't mean I should share them, much less push them on people. Ya know?

Other ideas: I like the silly names I think of from the "dancing girls" in Westerns: Clementine, etc.

Mine usually end up named after characters/names in movies or stuff that I love: Mal from Silverado, Mina from Dracula, and Bodie from the ghost town (although his got changed to Boone just because I heard it and it really fit him). Then I had a Tallulah because her weird voice reminded me of Tallulah Bankhead.

Most importantly, have we seen pics of these cuties? :winking:

She is a catahoula, blue patchwork with tan trim. Will decide on an official registered name after I see her papers, I know she's got double ott, panhead, lee and Aden breeding, which are all pretty decent catahoula lines, so some of that will show, just don't know what yet.

I know ultimately it's my decision since I'm going to be the one yelling her name most often, but it bugs me that people don't like the names I choose! lol. I'm a little neurotic! I could have lived the rest of my life in bliss if they had never told me they disliked my choices, more so because they can't give me a reason why! I really like Dally too!

Since y'all are being so sweet, here is a pic of Ms. Tinker last weekend...

Name her "Dammit" and tell everyone else to just deal.

That's a classic joke:

Two dogs meet. One says, "Hi. My name's 'No, Dammit!' What's yours?"

EDITED: I forgot part of the punchline!

Slightly off track here, but I do have a question. What types of shows do you show a Catahoula in? Can they be shown in regular AKC conformation yet or do you go to breed specific shows? I am purely just curious. I just purchased a smooth collie from showlines that I hope to do non-conformation trials with, but I may dabble in some conformation classes just to see if it is something I'm interested in.

She is a cute pup! I thought of the names Topaz, I know that is not western themed, I also thought of Oakley, as in Annie Oakley.

you guys are terrific. I have a blank log book for interesting names -- for men, women, animals. They aren't nearly as good as these. "Curious"and "Gretchen" are my favorite horse names in the log. Don't know where they came from but clearly this isn't my strong point.

Love this thread.

sd- they are UKC recognized as well as having their own registry (NACL) that they can show conformation in. More common though is hog dog and working dog trials, and those are sponsored by the breed or rednecks. :)
