One Week And Counting To Pick Up Vievo

Posted by Crazy trail adventurer, Jul 16 2009, 04:25 PM

Well, it's almost here!!! I've learned so much and I've really learned how being AR organized has helped to plan this trip. It was just over a year ago when I set up my calendar and to do list. It really helped to make sure we got what we needed when we needed to do it. Just finished remodeling the inside of our trailer, got our Coggins and HC's and we're starting to feed the horses the Orchard Grass Hay and Purina Equine Senior. Monday, we'll start them on small doses of Electrolytes. We bring the trailer home tomorrow so I can start getting it ready. Next Friday, we'll load our clothes and food and we're out of here no later than 3 am Saturday morning. We've decided we'll leave as soon as we wake up (which will be no later than 2ish) so we can beat the heat on HWY 5. It will be an easier drive for the ponies, which we'll be feeding small amounts of soaked Orchard Hay during the trip up. We'll be stopping every 2-3 hours and watering the horses while we gas up. If things work out right, we'll be pulling into Williams (Coluza county) by mid afternoon.

Here's our calendar Part I-
July 25th-Williams Ca
July 26th-Medford, Or
July 27th-Salem, Or
July 28th-July 31st-Camping with JK Lucky at Kalama WA

I also set up a page on my Caltrailriders site. It's called "Journey for Vievo"...

I'll post some pics here but story updates and most pics will go on this page.

Calendar Has Been Update

Well, I just updated the calendar on my www.caltrailriders.com website. It shows the dates and places we'll be staying. Woo hoo...it's coming together!!!

Countdown Has Started It's Confirmed

Okay, we're staying in Wiliams (just North of Sacramento) on July 25th. Just for the night.
Sunday, July 26th, we'll leave and drive to Sam Brown. We'll be staying at Sam Brown until Thursday, July 30th... My husband and I are really looking forward to meeting JK and the family.
We're now searching for a place to lay over for the night of July 30th, someplace between Salem and Portland. This will be fun considering Wyat can't eat any green grass!

Traveling Through Oregon

Posted by Crazy trail adventurer, Sep 2 2008, 11:07 PM

Well, this sure looks like one heck of a place to stay:
http://www.silverfallspark.org/CP/Current_Pictures.htm

Silver Falls in Oregon. Although this link doesn't say anything about the horse camping, our trusted Oregeon HC buddy, JK will lead us to horse friendly water falls I'll bet!

It's decided. We're taking the 5 up. We'll stop just outside (North) of Sacramento and spend the night. Anyone know of any lay up places in that area? From there we'll work our way into Oregon along the 5. We'll start the camp adventures once we cross the boarder. Give the boys a days rest, ride a few days than hit the road.

9/7/08: Plans have changed...
We'll lay over in Sacramento. It was difficult, alot of the places I called either have or are closing their doors to boarding and layovers. Very sad. But we found a fantastic place with very nice people. Our first camp adventure will be Sam Brown in Grants Pass. We'll be arriving there on Sunday and will stay through Wednesday, 7/26/09 to 7/29/08. (We love to have company!!) I talked to the ranger about the various camp places and she said this was a great area.

From there, We'll head on over to Monument and hopefully join up with JK lucky. I think we'll stay there from 7/29 to 8/1 or 8/2. I still need to make reservations.

Well it's August 08...hubby and I just went to dinner and started our list of everything we need to do to plan for our trip next year... We're picking up Tom's long awaited new Oberlander (light draft horse), Vievo. He was a yearling when he bought him two years ago.. We'll be picking him up as a 3.5 y/o.

We plan to be on the road for a month. We'll be traveling from Ventura, California to Mt. Vernon, WA. So, we're packing up our other two horses, Wyat (Appdx Qrt) and Schnapps (fiesty Haflinger) along with our very horse and trail friendly pup, Gaitway.

There will be alot to do. We're going to add a shelter to our pin so can accomodate the 4 horses (we also have another older horse, Ice. We're going to upgrade our trailer and add a few things, including a top cargo area. And we're going to start saving our pennys for new goodies for Vievo.

Before we leave, we need to map our route, find places to stay up and back. Have an emergency list of farriers and vets located along our route. Also track feed stores along the way and call ahead to find the kind of hay and cubes we'll be feeding.

It's going to be a long journey that will arrive very quickly. Any resources, places or people anyone in Oregon, Washington and Northern California would like to recommend, we'd greatly appreciate.

Also, we'll be hitting the trails! We look forward to meeting up with a couple of board buddies we've already chatted with. But we're friendly, kind of obnoxious folks with a sense of adventure. So, once we plan everything out, we'd love to meet our HC friends, if not to ride to have a beer around our campfire!

Cheers to the next year.
