I have a 'hard keeping' gelding who gets a ton of Nutrena Sr. and grass hay.

His manure grows fur jackets. I mean RED CHINCHILLA fur jackets ... strawberry blond hairs about 1 1/2 inches long that are thick enough that when seen by random horse people just lying in a paddock I need to pick, they say "What is that?"

SO ... anybody seen this and what IS that?

You people in moist climates have the strangest problems...

Jackets for your crap? Come on Flash, admit it, you sit up at night knitting little red sweaters for turdballs! It aint cold there, it NEVER gets cold there (relatively speaking)!

I think its the sugar....lets stuff grow much easier...

The nutrena senior has a lot more sugar in (molasses for palatability)...I seem to vaguely recall similar when my old man was on that.

I am not sure it is the sugar, as our horses are only on alfalfa and native short grasses, that are not very high in sugars AND we have this strange white fuzz in one day growing all over their manure, something I have not seen before. shocked.gif

Must be a new, sinister effect, somehow related to that dreaded global warming. confused0024.gif

Honestly, it even grows on my manure basket piles, sitting there overnight.

Maybe aliens have seeded the earth with odd, very aggressive molds, that will change it so they can take over? questionicon.gif

Your not the only one. Soon after we brought the boy's home we started to notice the same thing. Even went so far as to send the vet a picture..... ashamed0002.gif

We get that on the dog's feces, but not the horses.

And it con't be sugar in their case as they are on the bland, boring food.

I would say that, being in a semi-desert environment, good lizard country, we just don't have enough humidity to support those kinds of molds, the manure dries right off.

Since we had those last hurricanes and had 6" in six weeks, we became rather lush and those white, fuzzy horse apple coats have taken over, that we never see here.
Sure was surprising to see them that first morning.
Glad they were plain white, didn't come in psychodelic colors.
That would have been alarming.
Still don't know what QF has there, I would watch those carefully, they may have sinister intentions, or just be getting ready to change colors with the leaves. yay.gif

Hmm. I'm getting gray hairy stuff with little 'beads' on top....but only from the one new horse! Weirdest looking crap I have ever seen, and I should be USED to weird fungus here, with all the heat and humidity!

S'cuse me, gotta go iron my birthday suit.

I feed my old guy Beet Pulp and Nutrena Senior and haven't seen anything like that yet? Maybe I should leave him in a stall for a night and see if I get a sweater for his poo too?!
