So, it looks like my adorable, beautiful filly has a dentigerous cyst.

Just underneath her left ear, she has a bump. It just appeared about 4 weeks ago, a bump that seemed soft, not very painful. Kinda like a bruise. Well, it got a little bigger instead of going away.

The vet was out today, so we had him look at it. He says to be sure we need to do xrays, but its looking like an $800 surgery to fix it.

Some days, horse ownership sucks!

But has anyone else here ever dealt with this? Or even heard of it?

That's one of those misplaced teeth, right?

We had a filly given to us with a cyst with a partial tooth in it right under her ear. It was about $350 to remove about 10 years ago, and we were told it could have been much more but hers wasn't very involved. Easy aftercare with no complications for our filly. Hope yours turns out as well.

Its not really a misplaced tooth, but a cyst that originates embryonically from dental tissue. Surgical removal is unfortunately the only treatment.

cvm, I know I gave a lousy description, but that was all I could remember! Is this something that could be hereditary, or linked to other deformities? We sold our filly on and years later she produced a stillborn colt with the front of his head open (another lousy description, I know) and I have always wondered about that.

Nope, just a random misplacement of embryonic cells.

Thanks so much, cvm. That's a relief to hear there's no link. Even though we disclosed the history with the cyst and removal to the buyers, they blamed us for the deformed foal. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Well, I scheduled her diagnostic xrays. That will be the definitive answer. I had to ask my hubby to be for the money for it. That sucked.

But, on a positive note, we will have an answer. And then we'll have to talk about procedure. fun.

Well, we went to the vet.

He confirmed the diagnosis. 4 xrays to find the darn thing. I do have a cd of the xrays...I'll have to load the one that shows the cyst.

So, now, we will do the surgery. Fortunately, it doesn't have to happen right away. And it will be and $800 bill.

GRRRR. Not sure I like horses right now.

huggy.gif angel3.gif Good luck on the surgery.

I'd be curious to see those x-rays I've never seen a dentigerous cyst before.

Ok, so I promised an xray. Here it is:

As you look at it, this is the left side of her head. The top of the xray is her "face". About the middle of the left side of her head, you can see a solid white "bar". That was a marker, so that we knew where the cyst was. Just to the left of the bar, is what is causing her cyst.
