Jess is five, and she hasn't shown any signs of being in heat since her first one as a yearling. We have a new mare here on trial (yeah, right - she is staying!), and suddenly Jess is winking and squirting and putting her butt in Jula's face. Is this a submission type thing (so far, the new mare, Jula, seems alpha), or is Jess just more a fan of girls?

my mare always shows "heat" when a new horse is introduced. it is a submissive thing typically.

I don't think it's a submissive thing. Rosie showed signs of being in heat when I got Jedi. He's a gelding, though. And Rosie definitely was NOT being submissive to him. She was trying to kill him, it seemed.

It took a few days till she at least was letting him live. Gradually it got better. They are now best buddies, but Rosie is most certainly the boss. And she has gone back to never showing any signs of being in heat.

I think it's because it's a new horse, period.
