This is gonna seem like a stupid question (I am gaited horse ignorant by the way) but I feel I should ask anyways. I just got back from looking at a Foxtrotter with some friends. None of us have any gaited horse experience. The horse's back hooves stepped to the inside of the front hooves (looked like the back hooves could have nicked each other on each stride.) Is this typical for foxtrotters? It seemed like it created a smaller base, and therefore the horse was less stable behind than it could have been. The owner did say the horse had serious balance issues when she first got it. What say ya'll?

How old was this horse? Did he seem to 'wobble' when he walked?

I don't have experience with Foxtrotters, but I purchased a TWH that walked similarly (4 years ago). He has a ton of health issues, including Cushings Syndrome. The pituitary tumor enlarges to the point where it pushes on the brain and can cause loss of coordination and wobbling.

Is it "wobbles" or just "brushing"?

I'd be cautious, IMHO.

I have an MFT and while he has a nice reach, he still trackes even. My Standie has an overreach but also tracks even. I would have concerns about
a horse that is nicking itself.

It is also possible that the horse is shod poorly. If you really like the horse I would suggest a vet exam.

Mine and most others I've met are pretty level headed. The gaits are a blast to ride too.
