  1. Havent Been Here In Years

I haven't logged into HC for more than a few years. Wow, lots of new folks, lots of folks gone. I see some familiar names. I guess Facebook and other social media mediums have lured everyone elsewhere. At any rate, if anyone remembers me, I am still kickin and still have my 2 standardbred. Just thought I'd pop in and say hey! Gonna read some more posts and see what alls been going on.
  2. How Long Do I Leave Hay Out Before Tossing Out?

My horses dont always clean up all their hay, how long can I leave it out before I should pick it up and throw it out? I usually feed hay outside if its nice but somedays they just stomp all over it and munch some of it later. But how long is it safe to leave it out there before it's "bad"? If it's raining I feed hay in stalls--how long is it safe to leave in there? What do ya'll do with leftover hay when cleaning stalls?? I've been piling it in the corner but seems like they dont always want it. Suggestions?

  4. Swollen legs and sheath...reaction to shots?

Just a quick thought, but has he been stomping flies alot? Not sure that would explain the swollen sheath tho....... Just a thought, anyway.

  6. Leaving fly mask on at night turnout?

Are fly masks meant to be left on all night if your horse is turned out? Can a horse see in the dark with them on? Im afraid to leave mine on at night when he is on night turnout so Ive been taking it off when it gets dark. Is it okay to leave it on all night? Its off during the day because he is inside all day because of the heat and flies, and goes out all night.

  10. Rain Rot?

Thanks for the responses and the link, it was helpful to see a photo of what rain rot actually looks like. Judging from the photo, I'd guess what my horse has *isnt* rain rot. It's only one spot on his hip area and it's just a crusty area beneath the hair, when I parted the hair I could see the crusts and the hair fell out easily when I pulled. He is very clean, stall kept and groomed well everyday so Im not sure what the problem could be. Will try a couple more days with the anti-bacterial/anti fungal shampoo and spray and if no improvement, I guess its time to have the vet take a look.

  12. Rain Rot?

What does rain rot look like and what does it come from? While massaging my gelding's sore back I noticed a swollen tender spot about the size of a quarter, not a puncture wound, possibly a bug bite, but i used a antibacterial/antifungal shampoo yesterday and followed up with some microtek spray for rain rot today, just in case. does it sound like rain rot and if so what else can i do?
