  1. jumping pics

here are a few recent pics of us jumping. i would love any advice on ways to improve us. I think that I'm doing a better job of staying with him, though i still get left behind on occasion and jump ahead on occasion. this is from a recent lesson. not our best jump, but the only shot that is easy to critique. this was us schooling at big bear a few weeks ago. he was GREAT that day. and took a few fliers...also, i noticed he's jumping to the left again. Had a clinic and figured out how to fix that, but that was after these pics. you can kinda see him drifting here.. this one he took long...got left behind you think?! not sure what happened in this one... don't know if i just screwed up my hands or what??? i like this one this ones okay although he's falling back into his jumping over his shoulder habits. if i recall, this one was a bit of a chip in. i was thinking based on the other photo's that we were getting his knees' better and having him rock back more and jump nicer, but... we reverted in this one and just for fun... the scary double down banks. Check out my face!!! hee hee. it cracks me up! anyways... my thoughts are that he's jumping in nicer form. He's always had a pretty nice bascule but is learning to be tighter with his knees. i know i tend to pinch with my knees so i've been working on that. and staying with him better. unfortunately, i really don't jump him all that often, so i need to get better about doing it more. I think that i did the cross country jumps 4 weeks ago and i honestly don't think i've jumped since... so... must get to it this week. oh wait... i did jump some small jumps two weeks ago at the clinic. but that's it. bad me!!! any helpful advice for me and on how to get fleck looking better would be appreciated.
  2. Update On Fleckers!

I know ya'll missed us :) Sorry.. haven't been on here in a long time! But work is really slow tonight, so.... ;) Roany pony has been doing fine. She's got her winter woolies on board and is set :) Fleckers has been doing great too. We're finally feeling super prepared to go out and kick some Training Level Eventing Butt!!! We played at Pine Top a little while ago and had a blast jumping almost all of the training stuff and a few prelims. We even did our first corner on our first try :) So that's been going great. And our dressage is...well, we kinda hit a brick wall, but.. he's been doing fine. Just not really able to step it up a notch. We did however, win a year end award for first level schooling dressage with GDCTA (Ga dressage and combined training association!). I won't know what place we got until Jan 17th at the Gala, but.. we got a medal :) So yeah.. things were going pretty well... until... I think it might have all started with a lesson.. Not that the lesson started it, but that's when I began to notice the little things... We worked on really getting Fleck to use his right hind. He's always been weak in that stifle and I had been working on strengthening it but this time we really upped the ante. Well... he did great. Then I rode him pretty hard for two more rides and he seemed to be pretty resistant. I figured it was just because I was asking him to really work. Then we participated in an ICP clinic.. basically just a demo rider so the instructors can practice teaching. The first day was fine, but the second day was a mess. Fleck was "high as a kite and stiff as a board" cause it was cold and windy. And he just felt really stiff. The trainer wasn't really helping the situation either and I didn't say so because... it's all about them, not me. So Fleck and I continued to fight and it eventually ended with him being fast and choppy and hollow and resistant. Phyllis Dawson was the head coach and she tried to get him to settle down at the end but... by that point any contact was met with hollowness, bit evasion and bolting. So it was awful. I was in tears and had to go down to the other ring and hack a bit to "apologize" to Fleck. So.. the next day we galloped at the horse park and had fun! Well then he got a day off and then I rode again and he was just really resistant...wouldn't bend right, wouldn't track under... and then I noticed him being head bobbing lame going right on small circles. SO... the next day I rode again and it was almost the same but not as bad. So I gave him some bute and a few days off. Rode again.. and it was still there. So... I had my friend come out to look at him but it took her 7 days for us to coordinate a good time, so he had a week off. He was super frisky that day and she thought it was just weak stifle and I had pushed a tad bit too much. So we buted and were told to work through it. Well.. the next day he was still just... not his normal self. The next day after he was still lame and unhappy. The following day he was fine, but not real bendy. Then the next day... I knew it wasn't just weak stifle. So... I called my other friend, who is also a vet, and made an appt with her. She's also an acupuncturist, so.. :) Well... basically she found that he was super sore in his lower back, super sore on his right SI joint, and... slightly neurologic!! When you cross his left hoof to the right of his right hoof.. he just stays there. Doesn't realize it's not where it is supposed to be. So..that combined with his poor topline considering how fit he is and the work he's doing... she thought it might be EPM. Her worry was that he had a mild low grade EPM that was causing him to slip and fall in the back end and him "catching himself' had caused him to tweak his back. He also almost fell down when we went to lunge him. It looked like a slip, but... he does that an awful lot. Though... he has always tripped alot and "dropped out behind" alot... but anyways... so she thinks it's worth treating him and seeing what happens. In the meantime i'm buting, long and low work, lunging to help his back, and also putting him on some herbs for the soreness, and will get him adjusted by the chiro. We'll treat him with the marquis for EPM and go from there. The hope is that the EPM will resolve, which will resolve the mild trippings and clutzyness, his back will heal (and we may end up doing acupuncture and SI injections) and the weak stifle is still an issue but has always been an issue and will just need strengthening. So... hopefully fleck will be "cured"! Course.. we don't really know for sure if it's EPM and.. he may still be a clutz! I'm bummed cause I had a fun show planned at Pine Top in January, but... that's okay. There is plenty else to do come late Feb/March and by then my vet thinks we'll have him back in gear. If it is EPM it is soooo mild. So hopefully we can get him happy again and get him back to where he was if not better. I think the resistance was secondary to back and SI pain and maybe some neuro issues too. he's definitely not tracking up... more over with that foot, so.. it makes sense. So... keep thinking happy thoughts for Fleckers! Other than that, he's the same old big doofus he's always been. getting into trouble and driving me batty :) here's a few pics just cause i Know you are all in withdrawals :) Hope everyone else is doing well. this is a pic of our lesson prior to all this... it's not a great shot, but.... Look how WELL he's tracking up behind... he was sitting and using his butt so much that i could feel him kicking me in the bootie!!! this was at a ralph hill lesson!! check us out!!! We rocked!!! Fleck was soooo good that day! such a handsome boy!
  3. New Black Country Saddle!

hmmm... I might be saddle shopping soon :) I have a TB/App who has pretty big withers, a fairly broad back and HUGE barrel, and the awful dip just behind his withers. My Wintecs used to fit but dont' seem to be fitting anymore. My friends stubbens seem to fit well. Any idea if the BC will fit? How "custom" is it? And what kinda price range are we talking?! Thanks!
  4. Update On Fleckers!

thanks guys :) Fleck is really good about taking his marquis :) However.. he won't touch two of his other supplements so I'm having to syringe those into him twice a day also, so he's starting to be a bit fussy about it. But he's really not so bad. He's doing pretty well. He got much worse neurologically (well..still not bad) on the 7th day of the marquis and then has been getting better. However, his back still hurts. The chiro came Monday and I rode Tuesday and he was very short strided so I got off after 15 minutes. Then I haven't been able to ride since, which is fine... So I rode today and he was much comfier. Still slightly uneven going right but not bad at all. Then I cantered...yeah, he said THAT HURTS!!! He was fussing with his head, bucking, humping his back up, and just overall uncomfortable, so... no more cantering for awhile. I have a recheck this Wed or next Monday and we'll probably do some acupuncture and go from there. I just hope he feels better soon. He's still his usual self otherwise though... still a butt!! hee hee. Not really.. he's just a goof :)
  5. Dressage Chit Chat #23

ack, i'm so far behind again... MERRY LATE CHRISTMAS!! So... just a quick update.... Fleck is doing better... still sore in his lower back, even after the chiro, but that did help. He's much more willling to stretch out in the trot, but at the canter, he still hurts. So... we shall see. we are on week 3 now of the marquis and all seems to be going well with that. Got the Wii Fit for xmas.... so yay for yoga and pilates :) but no time to play yet. work was crazy and is finally a bit slow tonight. And the weather has sucked..rain, rain, and more rain. which is nice...since I can't really ride anyways :) anyways... hope everyone had a good christmas! Sounds like some shopping spree lightning!!! Fun!~!! and great poem tracy..t hanks for sharing! have a happy New year!
  6. Pictures Of Arielle

YAY!! Wow... she is gorgeous!!! Look at that TROT!!! Nice Job :) Can't wait to see more pics as you two really develop your relationship :)
  7. Jag Pictures

nothing to add but YAY!!! You guys look great!! much improvement :) You go girl!!! And I agree with the chiro.. mucho importante :)
  8. Possum Poisoning

Opossums do have a forked ****** though!!! Sorry to the OP... sounds like a horrible situation.
  9. Dog Is Sick

Vomiting and diarrhea can be due to just about anything!!! Something mild like an upset stomach to something more serious.... toxin, foreign body in the stomach, etc. I would definitely get him seen though... your vet may find nothing majorly wrong and then atleast you would know and can get him feeling better quicker. On another note... get rid of the rat poison!!! If it is his mission to kill all the rats, why do you need the poison? It's soooo deadly to dogs and very expensive to treat if you catch it early enough to treat. Also, some types cause brain swelling and there is no treatment for that. good luck! hope your dog is okay!
  10. Dressage Chit Chat #23

thanks guys :) KTS: it wouldn't by chance be Bud Lightyear would it?! if so, i know him and he's ADORABLE!!!! pretty fancy too considering how young he is :)
  11. Dressage Chit Chat #23

  12. Dressage Chit Chat #23

oh no KTS...atleast it's not too bad and should be an easy fix. glad to hear that frasier is behaving. Fleck sure isn't! ha!! he looks for every excuse to be spooky. good luck with finals! 3day: !!! glad to hear the lessons are going so well. I take it the bridle lameness has resolved??! hopefully so :) well....the arena is better :) We had it flattened and then we lined it with railroad ties... and then.. there was too much erosion before we got the RR ties in so our giant rock started to come through. So then we paid to have it removed...took them three days with a jackhammer and big old huge tractor with front end loader... but they finally got most of the rocks out and skimmed the top 8 inches or so off the big one. And then buried it back under. So.. now i have little rocks all over again....sigh.... but it's flat again (minus the slope for drainage) and no more rock poking through. so...as soon as we can afford it we'll get more sand. and then hopefully be done :) anyways.. good luck with finals! Maybe your instructor will curve and you'll pass! it'll be a christmas miracle :) anyways.... not much exciting going on. just anxiously awaiting the chiro's visit. fleck was definitely ouchy at the canter going right - twisted his tail and got real fussy. but his trot was nice. then i've been working since, so... but his herbs came today so we'll see if that helps :) i hope so since he's down to once daily bute now. last night of work YAY!!! last night was EXHAUSTING!!! so... tonight is quiet so far. so tomorrow i have to clean my house before my momma comes and go xmas shopping!!
  13. Possible T3d At Iea At The End Of May

Heck yah!!! For those of you in the area that are capable of doing it... DO IT!!!!! I'm so pyched about doing one this fall :) I Can't wait!!!!
  14. Update On Fleckers!

ha!! that's sorta funny :) nope... hadn't joined yet. and you're right..the worsening signs is from the inflammation from the dying parasites. like treating dogs and cats for heartworms. Which...makes me wonder if it's just mild, or if fleck really does have it. I did not test for the virus or selenium deficiency. But i do have him added on vit e (for the neuroprotection) and selenium (because it came with the vit e). anyways... i'll have to go check out the yahoo group :) thanks!
  15. Are Extreme Temperature Changes Bad For Horses?

sudden weather changes often causes the vets to get more colic calls The main thing is to make sure they have appropriate protection from the elements. They don't need to be stalled, but they do need a place to get out of the wind. Rain and snow is okay if they can stay out of the wind. Do they have full winter coats? Mine are blanketed but I also clipped one and the other is geriatric. Lots of hay will help keep them warm - the digestion process keeps them cozy :) The other main thing!!!! is making sure they keep drinking!! The drop in temps causes alot of horses to not drink and that can cause colic. So... make sure they are drinking. you may have to bring warmed water to them. Mine get a warm mooshy grain meal or beet pulp or even just soaked hay cubes (in warm water) and sometimes I'll even add electrolytes to help encourage them to drink. The warm water is probably the best way though.
  16. 1st Proper Dressage Show (pics)

I...WANT....HER....MANE!!!! and Forelock!!!!!! WOW!! that is to die for!!! She's gorgeous :) Looks very willing :) good job with her!!
  17. Pulled Back Muscle

i think that the sit-ups can be accomplished by both the butt thing...where you run your hands from the hip points to the lower butt and the drop their butt and raise their back, and then just tickling their tummy so they raise their back, accomplish the same thing :) Fleck does those, side to side stretches and stifle stretches before every ride. good luck!!! oh... i might have missed it, but...did you check your saddle fit? If her fitness level has changed, that might have changed her enough to require an adjustment in tack. And... I have bought the homemedics handheld massager from walmart.. i think it was $30 and massage fleck with that. he seems to enjoy it. I think it if's a deep muscle pull though.. you really need a chiro/massager to get to the root of it.
  18. Update On Fleckers!

thanks everyone! So far so good. He's not gotten worse at all on the marquis... which makes me wonder if he really is EPM??? But regardless.. it's paid for so he's getting the full course! He's been on twice daily bute for 6 days now and seemed pretty comfy today. But definitely still sore in his back or SI region - as was evident when we cantered right. Tried to let him do a stretchy canter and he told me it hurt. So.. back to just trotting long and low. He was definitely more comfy today than a few days ago at the trot. The chiro comes next monday. he's being very good about EVERYTHING BUT... the turdball wont' eat the $55 supplement for immune boosting that i bought him. I've tried it in everything...hay cubes, hay cubes with salt, beet pulp, grain... argh. oh well.... anwyays... hopefully the chiro will make a big difference and if not, we'll do acupuncture or inject his SI maybe.... keep your fingers crossed please!
  19. Hello, Thought I'd Stop And Introduce Myself

oooh, she's ADORABLE!! have a blast with her. Let us know when she foals! Are you keeping the baby? Cause... I'm hoping to get one in the next year or two and am looking at Wap Spotted and TB lines :) ;) She sounds like you'll have alot of fun with her!!!
  20. Hello! I'm Baaaacccckkkk. Fleckers Update!

Hey guys! Sorry.. I haven't been on here in forever!! I posted a big long update on the dressage board if anyone is interested. There is also pics of the most cutie patooty pony boy... whom I'm sure you guys have missed like crazy!! Hope all is well with everyone!!
  21. Appaloosa1224 And Flecken

    responded :)
  22. Updaters

awww, hope you both stay injury free :) man... he's a CHUNKY!!!! hee hee... .look at that belly ;) You look great... but mr ace... he needs some jenny craig ;) have fun getting back to work with him :)
  23. Update On Fleckers!

thanks guys! Fleck does have a weak right stifle, but that's been an ongoing issue. He's also sore in his back and right SI and we are working on that too. He's on bute for two weaks and chiro adjustments and long and low work. Then after a week after the chiro, we're rechecking and considering SI injections, meso therapy, acupuncture, or whatever else to help him feel better. He's also getting an herbal supplement to help ease the back pain. So... I'm going to hit him from all ends!!! And while I agree that the tail pull could be due to his hocks and stifles... He definitely has mild proprioceptive deficits in his front end, which... to me indicates true neuro and not just back pain. But...again, we're treating it all. Merry Christmas FLECK!!! ;) Oh Slyves.. I'm so sorry! I didnt' realize. That's very sad... I wonder why he didn't respond. I'd be freaking out for sure if Fleck started progressing, but... so far so good. I was warned the marquis might make him more neuro for a few days, so i'm prepared for that. I'm sorry.. that's very sad. thanks guys!! Fleck and I appreciate it! Oh, and yes.. he is clipped ;) Isn't he such a handsome man!!!!
  24. Huge Accomplishment

    yay!!! congrats :)
  25. Dressage Chit Chat #23

tracya: I would definitely get Colleen on arthritis meds. The glucosamine and stuff is helpful, but she may need medicine. Talk to your vet about Tramadol. It's a pain medication that has low side effects (she can't be on it though if she has a history of seizures or she is on anxiety meds, so.. if you have to do anxiety meds you can't use this...depending on the type). It's a great thing to keep her on for life with the low side effects, but.. you will also likely need some anti-inflammatories too at first. Those can have long term side effects, so... I would put her on that for a bit to help alleviate the inflammation and then use them as needed, but keep her on the tramadol. Pain can definitely cause the snapping issues. If you think it is doggie senility.. it's called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction and there is a medication for it that can help... but again, you'd have to take her off the tramadol. It's Denosyl. talk to your vet about it. But i would start with the pain meds. You can also try Hills B/D.. it's basically "brain diet" and it really helps the cognitive dysfunction dogs. I hope she feels better soon. It's hard at that age...especially if the weather is screwy too... But good luck!! I hope you can get her feeling better! IF you get to the point where she really is aggressive... please don't hesitate to email me (hbreauxdvm@yahoo.com) as I had to put my own dog to sleep for aggression issues... no health issues at all. It was heartbreaking but it was the right thing to do. So.. if you need help with that... but hopefully you won't :) boocoo: that's what we have. But i didn't think about putting it up on a table. course... i dont' really have a table out there... But maybe I can rig something! Good idea. and yeah.. it's also nice for the summer though when it's too hot to ride during the day! anyways... flecks' EPM test came back as positive but.. again, that just means exposure. So... regardless the marquis is on the way. Should have it Saturday to start on Saturday :) And then the chiro is coming next Monday :) Stay dry!!! it's a flood watch here!
