  1. Oklahoma Trail Riding

Some of you old time OKs tell me where the best trails are found. I've riden Carl Blackwell and it is great. Stroud Lake is ruff but the trade off is you have your privacy.... tell me about some others..... Oh, Bell Cow lake is not my kind of riding. I hate the old ride in a turn around to ride the same trial out.....
  2. Can't get Cheyenne to load

It's important not to make it a bad experience for the horse. I watched a loading training program by Clinton Anderson one time and it really does work. He shows the horse that a trailer is a good place to rest. I've tried it on a couple of horses and it works quite well. I've also used the feeding in the trailer thing. You can park your trailer in the pasture where your horse lives and chock it up real good. Tie the door open or take it off. Let him get used to it for a few days and then start feeding him in it. This worked great with my oldest horse when I first got him. He was 8 months old. He is now 14 and I can open the trailer door, open the gate, and he goes and gets on the trailer..... Some times my wife's horse will follow him and get on as well... [ 07-19-2006, 11:04 PM: Message edited by: Sand-Man ]

  4. In my humble opinion...... A gelding is steadier in his mannerisms than a mare. I have both and the mares are moody depending on the time of month. They go from B^h to perfect at the flip of a switch. Never had kicking or biting problems out of any of mine though. A very good friend of mine once said...."there are two kinds of horse people, those who have been hurt and those who are going to get hurt". They are big and powerful and have a mind of their own. My suggestion would be to find an older horse that has been ridden a lot. Makes the best kid horses. And do remember this while you are looking for a horse, there is no such thing as a "child safe" horse.
  5. How about an ice cold Margarita?

It's only 108 in OKC today... My suggestion may sound a little crazy to most, but turn off the AC in the house and then you don't mind going outside...... I don't have AC at my hose and we stay outside all the time. Just get in the sprinkler now and then or put on a wet shirt.... No I'm not crazy... I grew up in N Ga and we didn't have AC qnd we lived... come to think of it we were outside all the time then as well.... For the horse.... I have Arabian horses... desert horses handle the hot pretty well. Just keep plenty of water for them to drink and they do fine...
  6. Camping/No LQ

We've been camping without LQ for years and enjoy it very much. Specially when we can pack our equipment out on the trails to camp. I've done most of what has been suggested in this string and it all works great. From just sleeping out under the stars to sleeping in a tent. I cheated this year though and baught a slide in camper.... There are some pretty reasonable slide ins out there if you want to do a little work on them. I found one for 300 bucks....
  7. I am some what new to OK and am looking for some trails for week end outings in OK.
  8. Kansas buds

To much going on this week end but maybe we can make it next time. Never heard of Clinton Lake. Where is that and is it open to the public? BTW..... I met Elmer several months ago and he is an amazing horse....as was Mariana.
  9. Howdy from Depew OK

My first stop in your forums to say hello. My wife and I trail ride and camp. We are also members of a small local round up club. I will be looking for games for the kids and young adults to play on horseback....OK We may play along too....
