  1. The Front Porch

Im gonna sample them all. But of course Ill be voting for my brother and his best friend lol. We're all excited. Ive got everything packed except the cooler, which Ill pack in the morning. A friend is meeting me at my house and Im picking Zarinna up in the morning. I shouldve added that all the proceeds/donations go to the local volunteer fire dept. there. They used to host this every year but decided last year that it was too much trouble/expense to keep doing it. They had been doing it for yeeeears. The chili cookoff and the 4th of July celebration were the 2 big things that people really looked forward to every year. Someone has stepped up this year and has decided not to let the chili cookoff die lol.

Gosh I have a lot of catching up to do! Just popping in to say hello and that all is well with my kids and ponies. Really wish I could do this as a full time job. Also thought about boarding dogs lately. Not that I can do it at my place now, just a future dream because there is a need in my area. Had a doctors appointment today and Im now on a cholesterol med. Apparently my good cholesterol isnt good. My doctor says its inherited. Heading to a chili cookoff Saturday where my brother and his best friend have entered the competition. Other than sampling the chili, its a big field party/tailgating free for all. Everyone in the county will be there. Supposed to rain but Ive packed the ponchos, lol. It'll be fun.

He said hes allergic to pollen but hes never had hives before....hes never been on a horse, or so involved with a horse before either. Hes an active kid, always outside playing at home. They didnt go into any tall grass today. I don't know, but hes gonna need to premedicate if he comes back for sure.

So Cowgirl #2 (Lyric) is doing absolutely fantastic. This kid wants to learn everything and asks so many good questions, she blows me away. Yesterday I glanced over and she was picking one of the minis hooves. Im letting Cowgirl #1 (Zarinna) do most of the teaching so she can pass on her knowledge and feel a sense of importance/accomplishment. Im there for safety and questions. Today we had a rather crazy thing happen. The neighbors youngest son wanted to come to the farm. He also happens to be Lyrics cousin. So, I ok'd it with his mom and off we went. They played with the minis while I got the big horses dinner together. I put the neighbors boy (Darious) on Sonic for the short walk from the field to his feeding spot. Once I got him sitting correctly he loved it. He didnt want to get down. He did hop down and they all took a mini for a long walk. When they got back, it was obvious Darious was having an allergic reaction! His poor face was broken out in hives and his eyes were swollen and red. Poor kid, I think hes allergic to horses! We wrapped up what we were doing early so I could get him home to some benadryl. He was bummed, he said he had a lot of fun at the farm lol. I told his mom hes welcome to come again.....as long as he takes a benadryl first! LOL

If you have specific questions, Im sure I can get the info for you. The excursion trains usually sell out. It always baffles me as its just an old industrial route and the river, but people come from all over to ride it. I guess its one of those things I take for granted because its in my backyard so to speak. The open air car was originally used to haul logs I believe, its my favorite. About a month ago the freight train hit 2 people on the tracks on the same day within an hour of each other. What are the odds?! First one was a suicide, the other was a drug overdose/suicide. Crazy. My favorite part about the train is that if my memory serves me correctly, Buckingham Branch is female owned. Pretty cool. Ill get a few more pics in a couple days.

For you RailroadWoman. The train is all ready for upcoming rides. Had to stop and snap a few pics for you on my way home this evening. There are some others I want to get too.
  7. The Front Porch

True, but theyre doing the same for me!
  8. The Front Porch

Just a couple pics from yesterday

What a nice evening. I let Zarinna (cowgirl #1) take Lyric (cowgirl #2) under her wing this evening. They set up the obstacles together and worked with the minis. Lyric is meticulous when shes grooming, it was fun to watch her. I got the big horses dewormed and fed while they did their thing. Lyric loved every minute, and I think Zarinna likes having a partner. I told Zarinna when Whitewash was finished her dinner she could give Lyric a leg up and lead her back into the field to be turned out. (We do this often and its a very short ride, 5 steps, through the gate, and then youre done.) Zarinna has never given anyone a leg up but I assured her that Lyric knew what to do. I didnt offer any help (and pretended to be busy with something else) because I knew they could do it together and I wanted to see how they worked together. Before I knew it Lyric had climbed the fence next to Whitewash and was instructing Zarinna to push Whitewash over closer to the fence so she could jump on! I nearly died laughing! This kid has guts and I love it! Maybe she will help build Zarinnas confidence. Whitewash stepped away from the fence so I did end up lending a hand (but not much) and I let Lyric hop on from the fence. Zarinna then led them out into the field. They cleaned up the obstacles and put everything away, eagerly cleaned the horses fed pans for me, and we called it an evening. I came home and got my firepit going. A friend stopped by and we sat around the firepit, even made some hotdogs on my little grill. Now winding down and getting ready for 2 days at work. (Ill post pics tomorrow.)

Ooo, Gallardo is handsome. Just lounging outside in my hammock waiting for Cowgirl #2 to get dropped off. We've got lots to do today. Probably wont have time for it all. Benny goes to the vet on Friday for a couple shots, a heartworm test, and a well pooch visit. Shes on a flea and tick preventative but I didnt give it to her all winter. I just started her back up last month. Im wondering if the med has to build up in her body or if it works right away. Ive pulled 3 lonestar ticks off of her in a week. I hate lonestar ticks, theyre the ones that cause alpha gal (red meat allergy). Ill check with the vet Friday about it.

Kinda disgusts me that a school would take kids to a place like that.

Well, 2 things happened today. One, my original cowgirl is back. Shes been grounded for 3 weeks, lol. Yall I can't wait for her and her sister to hit the teenage years. Im gonna sit back and laugh and have a drink for thier mom. So Zarinna says her sister doesnt want to do horses at all anymore and she doesnt want to show by herself...perfect, we've got Lyric! This is gonna work, but we arent going to the show Saturday. Number TWO...Gypsy finally had her foal! Not sure if its a colt or filly. Gypsy will come up to me, quickly figure out I dont have a tasty treat for her and very quickly usher her foal away. Zarinna is supposed to go out tomorrow with a handful of grain for her. Other than that, these last 3 days off Ive had have been nice. Ive slept in, then lounged in my hammock and enjoyed the weather. Spent the afternoons at the farm with the horses and even caught a catfish this afternoon. Its back to reality tomorrow.
  13. The Front Porch

Shes the blind appy, the name came with her. I usually call her "girlfriend".
  14. The Front Porch

My new cowgirl Lyric got to come to the farm yesterday. This girl has no fear. And she asks really good questions and wants to learn. She wanted to know how to clean their hooves yesterday, so we went over all of that. She helped me feed everyone and even led Sonic abd Mr. Butters to thier feeding spots. She brushed Sonic while I tacked Whitewash up. I gave her a leg up and she swung her other leg over and sat in the saddle like she had done it all before. I led her around the pond where we both got to see tiny baby geese that have recently hatched. She enjoyed the ride and turned Whitewash back out when we were done. She'll be back Monday.

Mini foals are different, from what Ive seen. These foals are eating grass within days and are weaned (no human intervention) within a couple months, three at the most. Theyre very curious and full of energy.
  16. The Front Porch

As of yesterday, still no foal #2 Foal #1 has left his mom and has joined the herd. I watched him for about an hour yesterday and he spends a lot of time with Margarita, his sister.

I do have some shady spots in the yard that Ill eventually move it to. The best thing about this hammock is the the frame and the fact its portable. I spent an hour in it this morning but its very windy today and the wind is chilly so I came inside. Check out your local plays, they may have a few you'll like!
  18. The Front Porch

They actually change the set/stage for each production. It was not like that for Sweeney Todd. The work they do just on the sets(s) alone is pretty fantastic. My grass in that area doesnt grow much anyway, and I pay my neighbor to cut it. He cut it just the other day. Im good with him just mowing around it. My whole place used to be a parking lot years ago, so I dont have dirt. I have crush and run instead. Ill have to take a pic of the yard when it needs mowed, you can see literal stripes where the straw was put out for the grass to grow lol.
  19. The Front Porch

Ive already been in the hammock, had to test it out ya know lol. Ive had the firepit going too, its nice. Havent had time to fire up the grill but Im off 3 consecutive days this week so Im sure Ill get it going. Really wish I hadve gotten pics of the cast. They always seem to cast parts so perfectly.
  20. The Front Porch

I ordered a hammock (with a stand) from Walmart a couple days ago and it wasnt scheduled to be delivered til the 19th which was fine. I wasnt in any hurry for it. Well, it came Thursday! So now in my front yard oasis I have my garden, my tiny grill, my firepit, and now a hammock. Took pics for yall... The theater group that I frequent is doing "Cabaret" this month. I went last night, and it was phenomenal! The set was gorgeous, the acting was terrific, the band/orchestra was beautiful. I loved it. So glad my brother got me a season pass cause Im going to see it again soon. Got pics for ya!

Hmm, I havent seen any corn plants at my local feed store where Ive bought everything else. They have the best selection and variety..maybe they do have them and I just didnt see them. Ill look again. Someone brought a huge bag of yellow potatoes into work today to give away. Im definitely going to take some home to plant.
  22. The Front Porch

It is! Im gonna have to tell her to dial the enthusiasm down just a little though lol.
  23. The Front Porch

Corn in pots.....dont tempt me! Lol
  24. The Front Porch

Thats funny, they have a farm day like that here too. Its mostly the uppity old money horse farms, but its nice. We have a thing called "Old Farm Day" too where local farmers bring their tractors and equipment etc for the city folks to come gawk at. Lots of demonstrators, honey bees, candle making, wool spinning etc., its nice.
  25. The Front Porch

Ha, those were funny! Welp, the little girl cant wait to come back. She loved it all, open field, catching tiny new frogs, mud, petting the ponies and horses, dirt, petting the cows, she loved every second. She ran most of the time, lol, good thing I have good horses and not much bothers them. She has no fear, none. She listened well and even asked good questions. Shes gonna come back Monday evening. I got my firepit going tonight while I planted my lettuce and cucumbers. I think Im all done on plants...maybe. I kinda want a celery plant just for fun..we'll see lol. Ill have to take a few pics of my garden/yard. Got a little sunburn today too!
