  1. The family bed: co-sleeping with infants/toddlers

It is very dangerous having a newborn sleeping with you in the same bed,and I never let any of my kids sleep in my bed at that age, they did sleep right next to my bed in their crib.I feel as long as the toodler knows where his/her bed is letting them sleep with you on special occasion is perfectly fine, and I loved it.Even now my youngest is 11yrs old,and she sleeps with me every once in a while, especially during storms and such. Everyone parents differntly and as long as parents use common sence why not let your child sleep with you once in a while?
  2. Please be HONEST!

Being I dont have a personal realationship with you Ill be the honest one here.If I saw you out riding this horse what would I be thinking?Id be thinking that Id be admiring you for getting up and riding that horse. You look perfect,as with any young horse just build him up,even if you weighed 90lbs,you'd still wanna take it slow, but you already know that. Now get out and ride and post more pics,please..
  3. Solitary confinement for horses?

I dont agree with keeping a horse stalled 24/7 in any situation.A horse needs too be outside grazing, rolling, kicking up if he wants too most of the time.Stalling a horse at shows, during bad weather, illness, injury,or any other temporary situation is differnt and even in these situations the horse needs too be taken out for excerise. Too me stalling a horse due too its a "show horse" is like an oxy moron,if its any type of horse it should be able to live like a horse cut and dry.
  4. Animal Rights Debate Sign Up

Being we have domesticated just about every type of animal took them from their natural living enviorment yes animals have the right too be treated respectfully, and live their lives comfortable with proper food, vet care, proper shelter, and not in fear. Ill never understand why some people feel animals dont have rights, why do we have the right too take an animal and mold them into what we want? Im not talking about PETAs physco-babble here,Im talking about whats right for the animals if we didnt want animals too be treated with rights then we should have left them alone.
  5. I agree with Bumper with feeding an already mixed Sr. feed.I feed my 28yr old mini Purina Sr. feed starting late fall, and taking him off of it late spring. He has arthritis and this feed really helps him with his joints, and gives him the extra energy too stay warm.Ive had great luck with this,it is not expensive. Before I got his teeth floated I was putting warm water in with it too make it easier for him too chew, but after the float it is very easy for him too chew, and he really likes it.Im sure any good commercial Sr. food works well also.

  7. random acts of kindness

One of my favorite random acts of kindness that I do is whenever I go through a toll where theres a person collecting the toll,I LOVE paying for the car behind me not only is it fun too watch the toll worker explain that their toll was paid for by a total stranger, but the big smile and wave that I get from that person as they catch up too me too say thank you is always a great feeling. If only everyone, every day did just 1 act of kindness too a total stranger this country/world would be alot happier, and possibly safer.
  8. Rude vs Blunt

IMO you can be blunt and still be tactful at the same time. Its an art too learn, one Ive learned Id say the past 5yrs.I used too be blunt and not really try too word things so that it doesnt become rude, but as I get older I stop before my advice comes out too make sure I dont sound rude or hurtful. A friend of mine had this Paint mare who was 15.3hh,and fined boned my friend is 6'3" and at the time 300lbs when he rode his mare it was always a power struggle, and frustrating for him.He asked me my advice on too why his mare was so darn hard too ride, and I could see it was due too he was too big to ride her,and she had a hard time w/ balance. So I video taped him,so he could see himself ride her,and I asked what he saw,and he said I look too big for her,and he needed too find a bigger horse,it wasnt just weight his height didnt fit the horse and it wasnt a good picture. He really appreciated the way I gave my advice, and he sold his mare too a lady who LOVES her and is doing well in Hunter, and my friend found a 16hh big boned buckskin and is doing well in the show ring. Now if this was 10yrs ago,I wouldnt have took the time too be tactful,Id just blurt out your way too big for your horse thats why its always a fight when you ride her!LOL!!Like I said being blunt and tactful at the same time is truely an art,one that alot of people never figure out.
  9. Me and my family go to the dentist every 6months,and keep up on fillings,cleanings,etc...we floss every day,and brush 2Xs a day... Pretty much the same for our horses every 6months the vet checks their teeth, and float them if needed, and we also every once in a while will do checks with the bit's we use too make sure they are not doing any damage too their teeth,or mouth area.
  10. Letting others ride your horse?

I think ideally its good for a horse too get used to differnt people riding him/her with differnt weight of people, and techniques in riding, but on the same note we dont typically let others ride our guys for a few reasons. My daughters cob cross is only 6yrs old,and has tons too learn still, altho he is a sweetie and 90% of the time does what she ask of him he can still pull the ole' "IM SPOOKIN AT MY SHADOW SO ITS WORK OVER FOR ME!"and if your not a good rider your gonna feel the dirt real fast.My daughters Clydesdale even tho he just started under saddle 2months ago, anyone can hop on him and ride around the arena, but the main reason I dont let people ride either horse is I dont want our horses to get any bad habits.Especially the cob if someone rides him and lets him get away with the smallest thing,he will continue it and it becomes a habit that takes a while too break. The Clyde we dont let anyone ride except the trainer of course because of the same reason, also people who dont know the horse they are riding seem too be heavy on the bit,and that really irritates me.When my daughters friends come out too see our horses we have no problem leading them around, like a pony ride.I have a few friends who are great riders, and if they ever want to hop on Id let them, but they have their own horses.
  11. Owning a draft horse?

We have a Clydesdale and he doesnt eat near what I thought he would.I have a friend who breeds Clydes and trust me not all drafts are gentle giants, typically if you have a draft who isnt gentle that means someone roughed it up,and trained with a harsh hand,so before you decide to get this guy go out and spend ALOT of time with him.Lead him around, ask him too back up,groom him ALOT,pick his feet up,run him all over, look in his mouth,etc...if he passes all of this, then have a farrier come out and check his feet. How old is he?Has he been passed around alot?Dont be afraid to ask questions, because you dont want a big ole bully with health issues. If he checks out on all ways I say go for it,drafts are wonderful, and a joy too be around.
  12. Tieing horse out to graze??

I used too think this was safe too do,I used too tie my mini on a post as low as I could get the lead rope and go help my daughter if she needed it,or to use the restroom while he grazed, and all went well doing this off and on about 2yrs until one day I tied him like I always did, went to the restroom, came back and the lead rope was all wrapped around his front legs I have no idea how he did that in 2mins,but it scared me because if he had struggled he would have broken his legs, thankfully nothing shakes him and he stood very still until I got him unwrapped. For me I always think of the worse possible situation, and Ive never tied our pony too anything to graze he is too jumpy and big and he would end up hurting himself so now Ive learned not to even tie my old man to graze, now he goes tot he bathroom with me!LOL!! This reminds me of another thing I see people do and it drives me nuts! They leave the lead rope on their horse drop it on the ground and walk away form the horse leaving the horse unattended w/ a rope hanging on the ground!
  13. Adults in beginner classes with children?

I say yes its fair as long as everyone is at the same riding level, and the horse are pretty much at the same level. Last summer my daughter took her Welsh X too a Hunter schooling show,in her division she was the only child by 25yrs her compeition was all adult ladies on schooling horses, and here she is 10yrs old and on a pony just learning Hunter.I was going too cry NO FAIR!but I waited for the first class, and she got 1st place!!So I said nothing and at the end of her classes she won first place in 5 out of 8classes and was Champion in her division.I was happy I said nothing because her ego went sky high!!!
  14. Do you let your horse(s) rub?

OUr Welsh cob and Clydesdale are not allowed too rub their heads on us,or groom us when they are feeling good from us grooming them being they are so big,and an innocent head rub even from the pony can knock my daughter down, and cause some issues so we dont allow that. Now my old timer mini he basically is allowed too rub on me,groom me,lip me for treats because he has come so far with trusting me and the lipping for treats is my fault, but being he will not let anyone but me approach him it isnt an issue he also never uses his teeth. When Im rubbing him or grooming and it feels SOOOO good he uses his lips only and grooms my arm, leg, belly and the first time he did that my heart melted because he was showing me his love. Now if he was a biter or worse I wouldnt allow any lipping of any kind, but he is a sweetie and he would never hurt me.Of course I would never allow a pony or big horse too start the bad habit of being mouthy for any reason, but my mini is special and is my little king.
  15. Thanks everyone, for me the storms have past and we are in the clear, but guess what??Tomrrow we get too do it all over again!Do I dare mention every day next week thunder storms are expected??Yeah yeehaw spring is here...
