  1. Soft And Peeling Fog And Heels

My mare's frogs and heels have gotten really soft and sort of peeling. And they are sore now on rocks, fine on grass and dirt though but we have kind of rocky trails so I haven?t been able to ride her. It started after we got some rain. It has happened before and it went away on it's own but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help them now. I am not sure if it has something to do with the fact they were really dry due to lack of rain then I got her trimmed and for the next week we got a lot of rain and maybe a combination of the two or what. She sometimes gets a little thrush whenever it gets damp so I keep thrush medicine around but it doesn't look like that. There isn't any dark coloring or funky odor. Any ideas??
  2. Truck Help Poll

So the MPG difference between a 2WD and 4WD isn't enough compared to the chance of needing 4WD? Does anyone know what the MPG difference between a gas and a diesel is? Thanks guys
  3. Truck Help Poll

I am torn about what specifics I should look for in a truck. Not sure if I need a 150 or a 250? Not sure if I need 2WD or 4WD? Not sure if I should get gas or Diesel? Right now I am pulling a 2 horse bumper pull, do some pulling in the mountains but not a lot, and Pulling two horses. This would also be my primary vehicle. I hope to get a 4 horse eventual and be hauling 4 horses. With Gas and Diesel prices high I want to make sure I get the most efficient. What are your opinions when comparing gas mph, vehicle cost, vehicle use, and vehicle durability??

  5. Ahhhhh I'm Bit By The Barrel Bug....tell Me What You Think Of My Horse

Sounds like he has the most important quality in a barrel horse willingness/try!! Good luck have fun!! But you may want to try and get a saddle that fits you a little better eventually but for now go out and have fun!
  6. Clinics

Does anyone know of any good barrel clinics coming to NC this year? Or near?? Thanks
  7. Critique Pedigree

I don't know anything about paint line sorry... but I will bump it for you!
  8. What Do You All Feed Your Barrel Horses

I use and really like Cool Command by Hubbard feeds. It is high in fat and low in starch so helps give calories for energy but not a lot of sugars which can make them flighty... Anyone else use it?
  9. Small Victory Gained Today:)

It has been a long while since I have been on the board and I have to know what happened that kept you from riding jessie until now??? I am just really curious!!
  10. What Do You Think They Did Wrong On This Pole Run

I agree looks like she needs to work on making him more responsive, on rating and collecting, and maybe give him some time out of the arena. after looking at her 21 sec. run I would say she should also work on stopping not just with her reins but her body as well. when she is trying to slow him down coming in her feet go back and she is bracing on the reins. work on stopping by planting her self in the saddle and sitting deep. I think that goes back to working on making him more responsive. nice looking horse wish her luck in the future!!!
  11. What The Heck Can I Do?

If he gets a clean bill of health and there are no saddle fitting issues than I think maybe ground poles might help...
  12. Long Lost Training Techniques...

I agree. I get so tired of all these people who want to save horses and animals but know nothing about them. I had a friend who had taken pictures of a few horses he had for sale while they were in the pasture (there for dirty since they where outside where dirt is usually found). And had someone try and have him up for animal cruelty!!! Can you believe that!! Luckily the officer that came looked at the women and was like they are horses they live outside, they get dirty.... but really people kill me. sorry if a little off topic...
  13. Pasture Maintenance

    Thanks.
  14. Pasture Maintenance

I live in north central NC I guess. in a little town called Kittrell near Henderson which is about 40 miles north of Raleigh. There really are not that many weeds in the pasture surprising enough since it has never really gotten any care. but I have noticed something I have never seen before, little cactus plants?? Not sure what that is about. I thought maybe a renter before me had some in a garden or something but I saw some more down the road from me when riding. The land is very rocky I don't know if that has anything to do with it?? I do plan to get a soil test as soon as I find a store that has the kits!! Tractor supply said they were a seasonal item and they wont have them till spring!! Also I have noticed that a lot of the pasture mixes have either timothy or Kentucky bluegrass as highest majority of seeds in the mix. which do you guys think is better?
  15. Pasture Maintenance

This is my first year trying to maintain a pasture. I have read some books on seeding and maintenance but I want advice too. When do you usually seed in the fall in NC? Do I need to fertilize and lime in the fall too? Do I fertilize, lime and seed in the same day? What seeds do you recommend? How important is aerating the pasture? How long do I need to keep the horses off the pasture? Thanks for any and all advice!!!
