  1. How to put weight on Older Hard keeper

Thanks for the reply. The vet did do bloodwork organ function and everything was fine. I can't remember if they did a fecal..I did have him check her for worms. But I will definately start corn oil. As for the free choice hay; her hay lasts her a majority of the day but with hay prices being $12 a bale and all it's getting quite exspensive. I'll start giving her a flake or two in the afternoon so she has hay most of the day to eat. I'll also look into getting a probiotic for her.

  3. How to put weight on Older Hard keeper

I have a 23 year old tb mare who i've been trying to put weight on. We just had the vet out and she's healthy, he did her teeth and everything. Nothing that would casue her to be skinny as far as he could tell. Right now she's getting 2 flakes of very high quality t'n'a in teh morning with 1 scoop 14% sweet feed, 1 scoop of beet pulp and electrolytes. In the evening she gets 3/4 flakes of t'n'a and then 1 scoop 14% sweet feed and 1 scoop of beet pulp. My question is, she's still skinny her ribs are showing and somewhat her hip any opinions as to what I can do to put weight on her? She's healthy good coat everything but she paces 24/7. She'll just pace up and down and won't stop so I think that may be part of the problem. Also during teh day she's in the pasture and in a small area at night with my gelding. I do know that my gelding does NOT steal her food as she's the dominant horse and I supervise them during feeding time. So any opinions as to what I can do to put weight on her?

  6. Major breakthrough with horse =D

This is just copied and pasted from the eventing bored.. Yesterday I had a MAJOR breakthrough ith both horses; mainly Spinnaker though. Out flat work has been improving in leaps nad bounds. I got him by he end of the ride; walking, trotting, and cantering WHILE on the bit. We also were doing 90% of our downward transitions with staying on the bit or just a little above the bit but not giraffe like, like how we had been doing. And we got about 50% of our upward transitions mainly from trot to canter had a little bit of trouble getting to stay on teh bit from walk/trot. And also I was getting him to bend very well to the left which has been a little bit of a trouble with that. PLUS! We're FINALLY working through his speeding issues over fences. For a week or so I just knocked all the jumps down to poles or 18" and just trotted and cantered the whole course and an exercise that was reccomended to me was to stop 5 or 6 strides out then ask for a trot and proceed over the jump. So finally yesterday I put the jumps up to 2'-2'3 what we were working at due to some confidence issues from his rushing and all and he jumped the course calmly! We did have a little speeding on one of the turns but I just gritted my teeth and went with him and he calmed down within a few strides. So I think alot of his speeding issues was him getting a bit fast as I think he did do jumpers wbefore I got him and when he wold go a bit fast i'd get tense and he'd just go faster so we're getting better with that. Another thing..I had taken him to a friend's barn who has a small x-c course..And we did really well out there..I just cantered/hand galloped him around the field for a while just to get him listening to me and we went over some of the jumps and he did fantastic. . I love that horse and he deserves everything for putting up with me lol. Good news also, my dad agreed to finally let me build a few cross country jumps scattered throughout our place so I can work on x-c with him. Just 5 or 6 jumps but its better then nothing . sorry for the novel just had to share hehe ^_^.
