  1. family issue - have to make a decision

How sad for you. As they say-you can pick your friends but not your family. but that still doesn't mean you have to like them or be around them. Wait for them to call you and ask if you'll be there-see how long it takes, when they ask you, you could say something along the lines of 'gee, and all that time I was flat on my back I didn't think you knew how to use a phone...guess I was wrong'. If you really want to throw it in their faces. Once I had a 'friend'-once she started dating this guy, I was not even spoken to. Anyway, he had kids and she came to me after not speaking to me for several months, and asked if they could bring (his)kids down to ride my horse , yep-the gall of some people. So I said sure..give me a call, we'll set it up. I KNEW she would not call me, so I was the good guy. Haven't heard from her since...that was about 15yrs ago.
  2. Turning and Balance at the Lope

She's obviously having problems with it-she does everything else well. I would say to forget the loping for now-until you can build up more muscle and balance in her. Are you balanced on her or leaning forward?? If you're leaning forward and not helping her use her hind end, then you could be causing the problem.

  4. 'Take down the bird feeder'

quote: People DO have jobs... and are still poor. That's why welfare should come with the requirement that it be a supplement to regular work. I completely agree...and with a 3 month evaluation from your employer. I know many people who have 'worked' with those on the 'welfare to work' programs...they show up late, if at all, don't do their jobs and make it hard for those who are actually working. Yet, many are minorities and therefore to fire them is not allowed-or they can file the EEO on the company costing them thousands of dollars in lawyer fees. So, what I suggest is this-where they live, is where they work-let the county own the apt, let the 'dad's' do the yardwork, maintenance, and 'mom's' help out in schools, daycare, etc...whereever their children attend. But get them off their butts. If they're healthy enough to have a kid every year, they're healthy enough to work. I once saw a show where a lady-drug addict (I believe cocaine)was having her 7th child!! Of course it went to the NICU, then it went home with it's siblings...to her sister! The mom didn't raise any of them...her sister did-and guess where the money came from. You and me. I say after that first one, time to clamp it shut.
  5. So instead of taking them to an auction-they'd rather kill them? Or give them away? Why not find the people who put them on the property, and fine them! This IS caused by the economic condition of the country and the drought from last year. This year is better-but gas prices are worse-also a big cause of the problem. If the gas prices were still at $2.50gal and hay was half of what it costs...you cannot tell me that things wouldn't be different. And those dumping animals would still be doing it with or without the slaughter houses open-you can still send them there...so why don't they? Because they don't care now, and they wouldn't have cared if the houses would be open. There are those who just are lazy and won't take care of their horses. We had horses starving and neglected WITH the houses open! So how can you say it would stop this? I have doubts that opening up a couple of slaughter houses would take care of the problem. Take care of your own horses, who have taken care of you for so long. Just because they're 'worth' has gone down, doesn't give you the right to throw them away.
  6. Cinchy horse! Help!

quote: my horse is NOT sore, I've had that checked already. It's an obvious thing to check for to start off. So I'm not "being cruel" to my horse. So you've had a massage therapist and a chiro out to check your horse? You didn't mention that in your first post, so how was I to know that? And no...it's not an obvious thing to check, or it wouldn't be mentioned. I never said that YOU were being cruel, I said to ride a cold backed horse and FORCE him to go is cruel. quote: Besides, if he was sore, why would he ONLY be bucking within the first few minutes, and not have a problem after that??? Plus he gets super mad (doesn't bite, but pins his ears back) when I'm first tying the girth up, so I know it has to do with this anyway. Because they remember pain-unless you have actually dealt with the pain issue with massage or chiro (which is what I believe it is, it sounds like the withers are out or there is a rib out-which will cause pain), Then once the pain is gone-you just can't saddle up again-especially if it has been there a while. You have to help the horse to 'forget' the pain. I have worked on horses like this many times, so I'm not just offering criticism I'm trying to help you and your horse. Cheri and I just disagree-that's all...but we usually do. Not all sore horses wring their tail, in fact I've seen very few that do-usually it's more of a not being able to do something-pick up a lead, canter nicely, etc.

  8. Cinchy horse! Help!

If this horse is 'cold back' then all that means to me is that he is sore-and has been for a long time. So he is trying to protect himself from pain. Take care of the pain FIRST, then work on helping him work thru it. Forcing a horse to be ridden while in pain, is IMO cruel. Would you like to be forced to wear shoes that didn't fit?

  10. Stacey Westfall rope halter

IMO the only thing different about any kind of halter-is who is holding the other end. I am working with a Hanoverian (18hh), who likes to walk all over his owner...he is a sweetie, just BIG. I can get him to behave easily with his regular nylon halter on. He KNOWS what to do, just have to MAKE him. So I left my 'ole cheapo' rope halter with her to get him to behave a little better.

  12. 'Take down the bird feeder'

I totally agree. WElfare was implemented for those who NEEDED it! not for those who are just plain lazy-or who feel the need to have more children than the 'woman in the shoe'. I think that it should be for those who are physically or mentally disabled. The other disabilities are taken care of by medicare. Others can get a job. If you really feel you qualify-then you should go before a jury of your peers and present your case.
  13. 'Take down the bird feeder'

I don't know...the way things are going-that movie might be the 'perfect analogy' to the illegals coming into the country. quote: Funny, I pay out the @ss for health care and education, so I'm guessing the government doesn't hand this out to everyone, just welfare moms and convicts That's the point...those of us who are 'hard working citizens' don't get a dime if we need help-yet those who 'cross the border, and have a child here' get food stamps, wic, welfare, etc. That's why you pay out the @ss. Unless you want it to continue...we need to 'get rid of the bird feeder' And those that do work...send it home to their family, and we wonder why the dollar is worthless.
  14. Oil prices...let's drill here! sign the petition!

Yep, they sure do! Also, they sink old ships for fishes to make homes in, and for people to scuba to. Oil was much cheaper in the 60's when we had our own refineries and could drill here...about $.25 gallon
  15. Oil prices...let's drill here! sign the petition!

I remember it well. WE have done things about it...we have hybrid cars, we are working with ethanol. It's just that it takes years to get a bill thru congress. It's ridiculous-we need to do SOMETHING to get it thru their bird brains that we want something done...NOW.
