  1. Rain Rot

Thank you so much for all the tips,we just had 5 more days of rain and drizzle so i have to start all over again, but the good news is we are in for some dry weather so I can hopefully get this under control. If the horses would just stay in the barn on rainy days we would not have this problems,I am really going to have to build some stalls. They have a 80x16 run in so i should be able to get some stalls in there but how do you fix them where you can leave them open when the weather is nice?I was thinking of useing round pen panels or combo panels.
  2. Rain Rot

also i forgot to add that i have been dealing with selinium defiency and my horse got really sick before the vet found out what the problem was but they are on a supplement now and everybody is doing well except for a couple have rain rot and i am going to assume that because they are still recovering for a defiency that is why i am having this problem.the vet said it could take a year to a year and a half for them to recover fully,we are working on it,i just don't want any of them to sick and get down over this
  3. Rain Rot

i have found that a cat flea comb works well for removing the scabs and a dog slicker brush works really well to get the little left over peices and my horses love the slicker brush.they will just about knock each other down if they see one of them getting brushed with it.my alpha mare really gets mad if she don't get hers first.but you have to use it gently because it can scratch the skin.i really just want to give them a bath everyday but it is so cold and wet anyway that it seems counter productive.i guess i am just going to have to stall them for awhile.
  4. Rain Rot

    thanks,it has been a challenge
  5. Rain Rot

I have a quick question about rain rot.I live in centrel Il and we have had so much rain this year that every body is dealing with rain rot,it has been a horrible year.Does anybody have any good treatments for it.My horses have a big barn they can get into when they want but they hardly ever use it so their coats are never dry and with the winter hair they are starting to get rain rot and iodine is hard to come by and I don't like the blue stuff the vet gave me it really don't work, and it is starting to get cold. They don't have the kind that the hair falls out in patches,it is the little bumps that have a scabe on it and if you pull the scab off it is kinda moist.Any advice would be helpfull,a lot of people are struggling with it this year.

  8. I Need Help-please Read

we already ran epm tests and a few others and a neuro exam is very hard for a blind horse the vet did one but it didn't tell much.i am dealing with a very bad selenium problem right now i have lost 3 horses in the last 18 months.when you said that it gave me a little hope.i think i will give the supplement a little more time to work.i just started it 3 weeks ago.so as long as he don't have anymore problems i'll keep him locked up for awhile and see,but if he does it again i will put him down, right now he is a danger to hisself and people.pray for me please
  9. I Need Help-please Read

i really need your advice.my son's poa is blind and he really don't have too many problems but we have a major issue going on right now.in september of last year he had what i call sezirues but i am not for sure if that is really what is going on.he started turning his head to his side like he was going to bite his side and then he would sneeze 4 or 5 times in a row and then come unglued,he would stagger and run into things before finally falling over.he did this 3 times in a row.the vet did blood work and could not find anything wrong.he has been fine ever since.never had any other problems until last night about 1 a.m. i heard the dogs barking and i got up and look out the window and i saw him stagger around in the stall and he hit his face on the wall and when he did he reared up and flipped over into the wall,he knocked the boards off the walls.before i could get out there he was up and acting weird bafore i could go get help he started the sneezing again and went crazt again.he went through the stall gate and almost through the fence before we could get a hold of him and calm him down.we put him in the round pen and he was fine the rest of the day.about 6:00 p.m. tonight he started to act really paniced again we where able to calm him down but i am really worried.the vat can't tell me what is wrong and i need advice.it kinda sounds like a brain issue to me.would anybody just put him down or do you think there is hope for him?my son is very upset,i don't know what to do.we are watching him tonight and seeing what to do tomorrow.any advice?

  13. Selenium Deficiency

I live in southern IL,I am right on the border of the map for selenium deficiency, but my vet said they have never had problems.I think my problems came from my horses diet.I feed teff hay free choice and they get wheat pellets 2 times a day.I have a horse that is allergic to grains so I have to be careful what i feed.I have never had a problem until i moved. In truth I had never even heard of selenium deficiency.
  14. Selenium Deficiency

has anyone had any problems with selenium deficiency.I have lost 3 horses in the last 13 months and my selenium levels just came back really low.the vet did not check before because she said that they have never had a problem around here.i had 3 different vets and noone suggested this test.i read an article about it and realized that i had the same problems so i called and had them tested and they were deficient so we started them on selenium and after only 2 and a half weeks i can already see the difference.any advice?
  15. Unknown Neurological Problems

i was just getting ready to add my own thread when i read yours.have him tested for selenium deficiency.i have been having problems for almost 2 years with my horses since i moved to a new home and weigt loss and weekness, not being able to get up and muscle loss as well as copd and heart problems.I had 3 horses die in 13 months.one was 36yrs but the other 2 were 3 and 5.i have had so many tests on these horses and 3 different vets but nobody could find out what was wrong.last month i was reading an article about selenium deficiency and realized that some of the same things were going on at my place.i had the vet run blood work and a normal selenium level is 170 to 250 ug/L mine came back 13 to 17 ug/L.my vet was shocked. she said that she has never had that problem around here.so if i was you i would have him tested.i am supplementing and everybody is healthy again.good luck
