  1. Reaction To Alfalfa?

Hi All, Moved from MA. to central AZ (Phoenix area) a couple weeks ago. My horses have been doing OK/seemed to acclimate pretty well to the very new/different conditions in AZ. However, about 5 days ago, my Irish Draught gelding's back legs majorly stocked up and started oozing edema fluid. He was/is otherwise his usual self-eating OK, etc. Had the vet out-said it's likely an allergic reaction to the alfalfa hay my horse has been getting- with photosensitization produced by the reaction. Vet gave an IM anti-inflammatory and prescribed benadryl daily for 2 weeks, as well as no more alfalfa. I am also cleaning/dressing my horse's legs daily with Desitin ointment. My horse was on a mixed grass hay back east. Has anyone else experienced something like this? If yes-please comment. Thanks in advance.
  2. Tips For Sitting A Canter?

Does anyone have any tips for helping a student to learn to sit the canter and not bounce? Any suggestions will be most appreciated!

  4. How To Train For Sheath Cleaning?

Anyone have a good method they use to train a gelding for sheath cleaning? Pony gelding, unknown history-10 years, probably never cleaned in the past. He will raise a leg and kick (but gently) toward his belly at present; also will move around the stall. Really sweet boy in all other respects. Thanks in advance! [smiley Wavey]
  5. Moving West

I am an Easterner who will be relocating to AZ (possibly Mesa/Scottsdale area) within the next 6-8 months. I have some questions for all you western horseowners: where do you typically get your hay? How much does it typically cost? Since grass is limited, what do you do about turning out your horses-do they get hay in turnout, do you turn them out on drylots, etc etc? Is sand colic a major problem? Any advice you can give will be most appreciated. I am an eventer-and also wonder if there is any eventing going on in the state? Thanks for your help!
