  1. Hogged Back Filly

I am possibly going to look at a Palomino Paint filly that has a hog back. The owner says that it is a Congenital Defect and not genetic. Is this true? Also what will happen over time with her body. Will she be rideable or just a brood mare/ Pasture horse?
  2. Rescue Mare & Her Bump?

I have a rescue mare that has a bump on her back. I have rehomed her 3 times and she has been returned. The first 2 times the people realized that horses take a lot of time and money. The 3rd time the family said she had started to buck and rear up. Since her return I have noticed that the bump has gotten bigger. I'm not sure if this is the reason for the way she has been acting. She was also returned with a sore mouth. I'm not sure what kind of bit they were using but I feel that it may have been harsh or harshly used. So my question is does this bump seem like a sign or Bursitis or ? How do I treat this condition? Chiropractor, Message therapy, ect... I have worked this mare in the past and she has done great under saddle. She isn't sore to the touch. She has previously been seen by my country vet but he said that he can't find anything really wrong with her other than the visual bump. He said he could refer me to a specialist equine vet but I can't put that kind of money into her. She is a content mare when out in pasture with my other horses. Advise would be wonderful.
  3. Rescue Mare & Her Bump?

I thought it was possibly that as well but this is more forward than where the typical hunters bump is located. Prime is a registered TB mare, 11 years old, never was raced. Was told she was schooled over jumps but I'm not sure if that is true. I got her and another mare out of a situation that was getting bad. I put up the money, vaccinations, transportation to get them. This mare was just too much horse and responsibility for the first girl that she went to that I had to take her back in. So I looked for other people that may want her and it would only last for a month or 2 then I was always asked to come get her. I've put a lot of TLC and money into this mare to get her to where she is now. She is a big mare that loves her groceries. She will now stand for the farrier, loads like a dream. I am just happy to have saved her and the other mare from a situation that was progressively getting worse.

  9. Halter Class

Ok, this is a new thing for me. I want to start showing my Registered Appaloosa filly Bella in Halter Classes. Her sire was bred for it among other disciplines. I have never shown a horse before. I've shown Black Angus Cattle for a couple of years, but I guess that isn't the same thing is it. So where do I begin? What kind of training should I focus on with her? Grooming? Not only preparing her, but myself. I'm doing this for myself mostly, to break out of my comfort zone. I want to walk into that arena and prove to myself that I have the confidence to get in front of people again. First or last place doesn't matter to me. Just to prove to myself that I can will be payment enough. Not saying that I wouldn't try, but I wouldn?t be disappointed in myself or her. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks All.
  10. Halter Class

Her Sire is JustAFoxyCowboy. Her Dam is She's Country. I'll have to try to look up her bloodlines as I don't have them. I do have the Sires, but I really don't know much more then the names. I really just want to do this for fun.

I will not be starting her undersaddle until late fall time frame. She is still on the small side so I want to give her time to catch up. I'm am starting her ground training soon. I would really like to show her, but I have no experiance in showing or what I would even do with her. Any ideas?

  15. Silver Bells Aka Bella

This was the first time I saw bella. She like the others were skinny. Shoot that day we went out was hot, just about every pen had no water. We stayed to help him fill up all the tanks. To many horses. He was very overwelmed.
  16. My Spirits Are On The Up And Up =]

Lol, I just put an ad on Craigslist to see if there was anyone in my area that wanted to come help and hang out with me and my horses. I'm not looking for a trainer but someone that truely wants to help out. Like cleaning, grooming, feeding, and of course riding.
  17. Saddle Silver

I would say your best bet is to find someone that can make it custom for you. It will be spendy, but you will get exactly what you want. My husband knows a guy that is a silversmith and makes horse tack. I've never seen any of his peices, but my husband said that he make real nice stuff.
  18. Silver Bells Aka Bella

That was one of the first things that I did. I had her vet checked and shots given and I had my farrier do her feet. He came out ever 3 weeks for like four months to get the fronts into shape. Just a little bit there and here and she was good to go. Her backs weren't as bad. She has two blue eyes. The first time I saw her she was bossing some horses around her pen. Her blue eyes and coloring is what attracted me to her. Lol my husband said it was her attitude. At that time she was very thin. You could see every rib and hip bone. As well as the rest of the horses. She has come a long way from then to now. She wasn't even halter broke. We had to lasso her to get close enough to put a halter on. Thats why she had a regular buckle halter and not a rope halter on. I like rope halters best. Anyway she is doing great.

The place where I got her use to be a very nice ranch called Happy Heart Ranch in Idaho. Well, it still is a nice place. The issue was that the man was getting older and his adult kids didn't help out as much as they normally do so it was all on his shoulders. So he made the decision to cut down his stock so it was more managable for him to care for them. He has beautiful horses, but there care started to be lacking. I first went to go see his ranch on my anniversary in July. He had pens and pens full of horses. Yearlings, 2yearolds Fillys and geldings, 3year olds and so on in age. She was skinny like alot of them except for the ones he showed. He was upset with himself for that so he said we could have two for one if we so choosed. My hubby wasn't up for me purchaseing another horse at the time so we left. It was a nice day and they were very nice people. Then in Feburary 14th an image of her popped in my head. I called him up to see if she was still available. She was pending sale to someone in Texas, but the guy had been stalling on the payment so he said come look at her again. First come first serve. So we drove the 1 1/2 away from where we lived to go take a look at her. This time she had put on some weight, but was covered in mud balls. Well every horse was covered in mud balls for that matter. Under all that mud I saw the same beautiful filly I had seen before. This time he would only sell her as a single as he already had a buyer for her. So we paid and the next week picked her up and brought her home. The poor thing would clank and clink as she ran around her pen from the mud balls. As soon as it warmed up I soaked her down and curried as much of the mud balls off of her as I could without hurting her. Then I dryed her off as best I could and let her run. She ran so fast and crazy. She felt good. She is my Bella
  20. So my hubby is in the Air Force and got orders to Clovis NM. So we packed up and moved here from Mountain Home, ID. We brought along our 4 horses, Byzy, Charlotte, Patriot and our newest filly Bella. I really don't know anyone here and am boarding off base at a little place that doesn't normally take boarders. Im looking for work, maybe going back to school and don't have anyone horse crazy around me. I so miss that. My hubby puts up with me and my animals the best he can. Ya know when an man truely loves you is when he joins the service and moves you, your animals and along the way pick up more animals. Lol, every base we have been at we have added a horse.

Yes most are run down or have been closed for sometime. The best one I have ever stabled at was at Edwards AFB, CA They had new just put up new metal buldings with long open runs. If you got a double stall then it had twice as big tack room as the single stalls. It was wonderful. I would go back to that base in a heart beat just to board my horses there again. $25 per stall. Feed was the most expensive I have ever bought. It was upwards of $14 a bale, but thats what you have to pay when you live in the desert. When we retire I hope that we live near a base so that I can open a boarding facility where I can cater to the military members. I would also allow other boarders of course, but a safe environment where they would know that their horses would be safe and well cared for. I wouldn't want to charge a lot as I would just want to make sure that Military families could continue to have horses while serving in the military. It isn't easy moving ever few years with large animals.

It is a whole different culture here. Not saying it is bad, just different and interesting. There is so much I want to do and learn here. I just wish I could make some friends here. When we were stationed at Mountain Home AFB, ID I did board on base. Things got real crazy out there so my husband and I bought a house and moved the horses off base as soon as we could. About a year later the base decided to close the stables and bull doze all the buildings. Only one building was left and the last I heard they were moving it to be used somewhere else. It was real sad that it came to that but I understand why the base closed them.
  23. My life has been crazy, since I started college. I could use your help if you are able to. I am writing a report about newer veterinary technology that has or can help animals. I need some specific topics that could help lead me in the right direction. I need information that is newer than the year 2000. I'm not sure if you have heard of anything, but if you have I would appreciate you letting me know. Thanks.
  24. A Suicide At Our Base

Earlier this week an SP (Security Police)at our base killed himself. His wife had said that he was just sitting in the living room with her and the children . He got up went into the back bed room, took his military gun and shot himself. I never met him or his family, but it has hit me so hard. His co-workers, friends and his family say there was nothing out of the ordinary. My husbands co-worker was a friend and he said he was his normal happy self. The active duty men and women get counseled about if they have feelings of wanting to harm themselves just about every month, if not more. This last summer we had another suicide on the base and there were 2 more that same week at other bases. We also had a guy that went AWOL, luckily he headed to his mothers house in California before he did anything to harm himself. What could bring someone to do such a thing? I now worry about my family, my husband. This has really hit home for me. The SP's memorial service is tomorrow morning. Not many of the Military guys will be able to go because there is an exercise and they can't get out of work. It seems like every week there is something on the news about someone shooting someone or themselves. What is going on with our Country.
