While I'm not planning on breeding anytime soon, I have been studying bloodlines in my morgans and look forward to having a foal once we get our feet on the ground in a new home. It's more of a hobby at this point, looking at stallions and watching videos. My question is... how do you feel about AI? I know people have a lot of success with it and I've used it myself on dogs, but I had nothing but pain and frustration with the horses. I had a mare that I wanted to breed. I picked a stud with excellent confirmation and bloodlines. He complimented her to a T. He was the hightest point-earning horse in the registry at the time as well. I had a pretty penny wrapped up in this. The vet was out and we did ultrasounds to make sure that she was ovulating and the whole 9 yards. I had 4 or 5 shipments done and ended up trying a different mare and STILL never got a pregnancy. Close to $3000 down the drain and nothing to show for it. Of course the breeder pointed the finger at everyone else but her stud. Said it was the vet's fault. They do check the semen when it is collected, but a lot of good that did. Mare had a healthy follicle, stud supposedly had a good collection. What gives? So. My question is how successful have you been with AI? Of course the use of AI can open a lot of doors as to what studs I could have access to, but I'm still so heartbroken and angry about such a big waste of money. Thoughts?
