Dressage Board's Chit Chat Thread Vol. 2

Recommended Posts

The other one was getting fairly long so I'm starting up a new fresh one for everyone [smiley Wavey]

Anything non dressage related can go here, as I'm trying to keep the rest of the dressage board, dressage related. If you have a thread deleted, and it wasn't because it was getting out of hand, check here first or check to see if it was moved to a more appropriate forum, I'll always PM to let you know what happened to the thread unless it got lost beyond my knowledge or the Admin deleted it. no havent herd from Remmie, praying for her safety

SG- what happend with the whle stalking thing?? thats scary!!

yeah i emailed a saddle fitter and there and i also got a name for another one today at the barn. My moms taking the saddle back and bringing home a county for me to try on him. its a county competitior and its a narrow tree, we'll see what happends

Quick update on Tadd, too tired to do much of anything else MRI's aren't covered by their insurance, but he talked to his mom last night and he's going to go to Seattle some weekend in the next couple of weeks to get a set done of his chest. His mom is in the medical field (a physical therapist) and deeply respects this specialist academically (though she doesn't like him personally) Tadd has gone to him before, when he severely injured his back (for those that don't know, he no longer has any ligaments in the lower lumbar region of his back to support his spinal column) So hopefully this guy will be able to do more for him than the last one did

Posted by Wild Oaks Farm (Member # 28674) on 10-23-2005, 11:31 PM:

Inky - I hope Tadd can finally get some answers. It sounds scary and I hope you can find something out!

BQD - I hope the next saddle you try will work! Have you tried a Bates? Mine fits my shark-fin withered TB with the narrowest gullet. But of course every horse is different so there's not telling if it would work for Gats or not.

SG - Your job sounds awesome! Congrats!

We had the company picnic yesterday. It went off without a hitch and all the kids loved getting to ride.

I went with my mom today to look at some PMU mares, and it looks like she'll be getting two. A pregnant Percheron mare named Blossom and a REALLY really cute appy mare (pony sized! yay! ) named Marnie. They are both only halter broke. Blossom is still kind of shy, but the appy tried to climb in our pockets and come home with us today, so I think she'll be a pretty easy project!

Oh! And my pregnant donkey looks like she's getting really close to having her baby. I am very excited about it (and nervous too). It will be her first baby (and ours too!).

wild oaks- congrats on the new mares!!

inky- hoping everything is fine with Tadd

Rem, are ya out there??

Posted by FionaJ (Member # 13358) on 10-24-2005, 09:40 AM:

Hope Remmie's okay but they may not have power or computer service with the storm right now.

BQD, I have a friend who is a fitter and helped me fit my saddle who's horse sounds a lot like yours. Her Adam has very high withers. Interesting, her horse and one of mine actually have the same saddle--exact make and everything. In fact, when I was having trouble finding a saddle and trying every saddle in her and my trainer's barn, she went straight to Adam's and said she thought it would fit best. It's not a narrow, but the panels in the front are angled differently, which is why my County that I did ride did not work. This is a Passier, which is very expensive, but you can find some used ones. Adam's problem was very high withers. My horse's was a flatter back with more pronounced withers in relation to that back, so the deep seat with gusseted panels fits perfectly.

It looks like you are, most unfortunately, having to look at how individual saddles are made, and probably learning a bunch--I know I sure did. For what you are looking at spending, a saddle fitter is the way to go, although you have to be careful with them as well--some of them try to get you to by custom or semi custom saddles when you don't need them. I've been that route too!!!

If Remmie is in the Tampa Bay area she's probably making out fine. They will get wind and bands of rain and have probably lost power, but it's the Keys and Miami that are getting the brunt of the storm.

Posted by KrazyTBMare (Member # 4004) on 10-24-2005, 10:42 AM:

Sorry Ive been MIA guys.

Went and rode yesterday. Its been about a month since I rode Layla. She was great. We had a cold front move in and it was only 71 yesterday! I let her warm up on the lunge (not b/c she would do anything u/s but b/c I find she relaxes more if I let her start out on the lunge).

She was fantastic. A little resistant in her jaw but I was able to supple her and had no problems. She wanted to get a little rushy at the trot as she likes to decide our tempo and has to remember to wait for ME, but she was really good. And now that my chiro has my pelvis going back into place, my cantering to the right problem is going away. Since my right hip was forward and the left back, when we cantered to the right, I was always fighting with myself to get my right leg under me and sit properly, which ended up not pretty. We had a great canter to the left, and I DIDNT grip with my thighs like I used to, so she was relaxed in the back. To the right it will still take both of us getting used to, but after I settled into it, and she realized its ok, we had a really nice canter.

I am going out to ride again today with my friend. She has a digi cam so Ill have pics. YAY. Probably crappy but whatever.

I need to go up to my trainers and get my cooler and heavy weight turnout for Layla. Its windy and rainy and only 59 right now. And it is going to get into the 40s for the next few nights and I dont want her getting fluffy.

Anyways, thats all. I need to go get some food.

Posted by Remmie (Member # 21662) on 10-24-2005, 11:39 AM:

Hi Folks! Thanks for all the well-wishes.

It didn't hit us too badly. We are south of Tampa Bay, near Sarasota. We had fairly heavy winds all night (not like last year though). We have a mess to clean up but no real damage. No trees, or fencelines lost.

The horses were fine. Tristan takes these things a lot harder than anyone else.

Got to get those blankets out now. Yesterday it was 90 degrees and so still and humid it was killing us while we were doing our preparations but now its 58 degrees and dropping. That's cold for Florida. Those temp variances are hard on the horses.

I haven't had time to read all the posts but, I saw that Tadd hasn't been able to get to the bottom of his problems and SG got a new job. Got to go back and see if she described it.

Congratulations SG. Good things just don't come as quickly as we'd like.

Congratulations also to BQD. I saw that you got a nice new saddle. Hope it fits Gatsby.

Inky: I hope Tadd can get to the bottom of this. Keep pushing him.

Posted by KrazyTBMare (Member # 4004) on 10-24-2005, 10:40 PM:

Glad you didnt get it too badly down there Remmie. We got some WAY outer bands and some wind but mostly it was the outer bands joining with a cold front.

Its cold here today as well. Yesterday it was only 71 and today it was over cast about like 61 and raining and very windy. The sun finally came out this afternoon and it hit about 66 but dropped back down to 60 and very windy and cool this evening. Supposed to drop down to the 40s tonight.

I went to my trainers and got my cooler and heavyweight turnout sheet for Layla. I washed them and boy there was a lot of hair in them! It didnt look like it. I am STILL running the washer empty on rinse to get the hair out. Now I know why the laundramat doesnt allow horse items!

I rode tonight with Sarah. Laylas still not too sure about being ridden at night. At my trainers under the lights (that were not bright at all) she would act up a LOT. Well for her its a lot. Not really bad in terms of all horses but for her it was. Tonight it was cool and windy and there are woods around the arena. Luckily its covered and very well lit. She wasnt too sure what was going on, but more in the sense of just looking around interested, not spooky. She also just came into heat so she was Miss Space Caddet this evening. She was very good though. I am now exhausted and even more sore than I was from yesterday.

No pics. I lied. Actually, I didnt. The digi cam wasnt happy with it being night and even though it was VERY bright with the lights, the camera was having a hard time focusing on us riding b/c we were moving. So maybe later this week?

Tomorrow I am going at 2 to see The River City Brewing Company. Its a brewery on the river downtown that is also a 5 star resturant. They have ballrooms upstairs and I am going to check them out for a possible reception site. From the menu and the prices, if I like what I see, this will be our reception site!

Thats the website. Not too many pics but still. The resturant itself was stunning so I have high hopes for the 2nd story. Wish me luck that its all Im dreaming of.

Well I am going to read a few more posts and then go lay down and snuggle with The Boo (my kitty). Have a good evening.

Remmie! Glad to see that you're okay! You hadn't posted in a while, so I was getting a bit worried!

At any rate, after working both jobs yesterday (7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.) I decided that I was going to wear myself out. So I put in my two weeks notice at the pet store. I feel really guilty about doing this--like i'm a wuss or a quitter. Lots of people work two jobs, why can't I? [Frown]

Working two jobs can be next to impossible and you have to take care of yourself first and foremost because it is about the quality of what you give to the job. If you are tired--and who would not be with those hours--the quality of what you give would have to suffer, not to mention what you have to give to the people you love around you. You have to be able to nurture yourself as well. You did the right thing! You have to take care of yourself.

I can hardly keep my own life straight, much less keep up with all of you guys. You folks are BUSY!

Ditto that! [Eek!]

New jobs, hurricanes, new saddles, chest pains, geez louise it's hard to keep up....

I'm just sitting here twiddling my thumbs until Friday...not really, have way too much work to do but almost zero motivation to do it. We're having a series of car problems--the past 5 or 6 weekends one of the vehicles has been in the shop, and with our commutes (me 30+ miles, hubby 40+ miles) we can't be carless. Thankfully there's a Budget near the house and the little gal behind the counter is on a first-name basis with us now. [Roll Eyes]

Both the truck and the car (99 Dodge Ram, 01 Olds Intrigue) have been excellent until they weren't. Seems everything went at once, truck needed a new tranny ($2000), then the car needed a new alternator and a couple of other major things replaced ($1500) then the engine light went on and stayed on, car started overheating, etc. etc. (another $600) and it's STILL not running.

Cars.....can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. At least here in the golden state, anyways. [Confused]

Well there went half my paycheck.... $300.00 and two hours sitting at the vet clinic. Would've been $400.00 if Chloe was mine [Eek!] Thank God she isn't! So we encountered a whole slew of problems let's start with the smallest animals:

Patch: Has a viral respiratory problem either chlamydia/herpes/I-forgot-the-name and what may be an edema on his eye, but she suspects it's the beginning of an ulceration so she sent me home with non steroidal ointment that I'm supposed to apply 4-6 times a day for 7-10 days. My cat is now stained orange from testing for the ulcer [Razz] He also got his vaccinations and I prepaid his next visit since it's a follow up on boosters. I get 10% off for prepay and a free microchip ID on him. Also got wormed. He didn't get a fecal done today, but they suspect he has roundworm, reason being coming up next. But hey we got 5 lbs of free Science Diet kitten formula for him!

Chloe: Corneal scar on her right eye and something-I-can't-spell sclerosis as well, thickening the lenses. Her fecal sample indicated she has roundworms so she was wormed. So they think the cat had roundworms from the shelter and passed it on to Chloe since Chloe eats his poop and as a result Squatch gets wormed too. They don't think her habit of chewing on her wrists is due to allergies, they think it's just a neurotic behavior developed when she was in Arlington from boredom. She got her vaccinations as well.

Squatch: Wormed, has another ear infection (big surprise there, he always gets infections in his left ear) and we're watching a patch on his belly that is missing hair. Was declared overweight (we knew this, he's on a diet now [Crazy] much to his dismay) Got a lepto vaccination since he goes into ponds, streams, lakes, etc. Chloe won't touch water so she didn't need one.

So now I'm exhausted. Stayed up till about 5 in the morning because I couldn't sleep, got up at 7 am, took the dogs and cat to the vet at 8 am, stayed there till 10 am, and it's now 10:30 and I'm getting food in my system and will probably crash afterwards!

As for Tadd, he probably can't go back to Seattle until Christmas, so it'll probably be about 6 weeks before he gets his MRI's done.

You're definately not a wuss or a quitter SG [Huggy] You're obviously have a good degree of common sense to know when to stop before it gets too stressful on your life! (Wish I had that ability to make judgements [Razz] ) By the way, CONGRATULATIONS on the new job in the first place. Don't think I got around to saying that before. Been really frazzled on this end of the computer screen.

DQ doesn't it always happen that way? EVERYTHING breaks down at once so you never have a back up, and of course it would happen right when you're about to possibly purchase a horse. Sending good vibes for the vet check on Friday as well. I hope he passes it! (Or was he a she? Like I said I'm braindead here!)

DawnC, I know what you mean, it was getting hard for me to tackle as well!

Inky--you are proof positive that there's no such thing as a free cat... [Eek!] or free anything. Lo and behold if they don't end up with some unpronounceable disease or something that you now have to contend with... [Roll Eyes]

I hate taking my animals to the vet because I never get out of there with just what I went in there for. Usually there's some other dire thing going on that starts the money meter running...

FREE, FREE, FREE. Nothing in life is free. That is true. Lately, I have been offered a lot of free horses. Now, I need another horse like a hole in the head. I definately do not need another dressage horse. I definately do not need another mini or another driving horse. Enough!!! All horses need shots, farrier and feed. They all poop out more than they eat. They all need "clothes." They all need attention. I already have four.

That's why I am going to check out two free horses tomorrow in Ocala. (Because I don't listen to myself.) One is a 9 year old Tennessee Walking Horse who is (supposed to be) a super well-trained glide ride with no health problems. He sure is a looker. Catch: He has had the crap beaten out of him and is petrified of people. Do I really want to do that again? I already have two one (wo)man beasties.

The other is a Paso (I don't know if what kind of Paso)and I haven't discovered much about her yet except she is a great ride and they would like me to have her, because they know she would have a forever home here.

I have turned down in the last few weeks, a nice quarter horse gelding, a lovely quarter horse/arab cross, a lovely paso mare, a Missouri Fox Trotter and a yearling mini. Is it that hard to sell a nice horse these days?

Well, a glide ride would be nice cause I'm getting old.

SG- working 2 jobs is HARD!!! your not a wuss! [Huggy]

Inky- hate how those "free" animals turn into the most expensive!

DQ- hope you get your car problems fixed soon!

Remmie- [ROTFL] the more the marrier(sp??) right?? maybe you need a good stable hand down there to help you [Wink]

as far as me, i took that bernina saddle back to the tack shop. the women looked highly annoyed. i told her WHY the saddle didnt fit and she said "as long as it doesnt sit on his withers it should fit, its sapposed to sit on his spine" [Eek!] ummm.. HELLO! what bazzaro world do you live in?? [bang Head]

"maybe you should get a professional out there", yes i said, hes coming tuesday(next). "whats his name" so i told her his name. "oh him, he'll have you buying one of his custom saddles i'm sure" had to bit my lip on that one [Mad]

well tonight i'm going to do a wither tracing and go back to that tack shop tomarrow and look AGAIN [Roll Eyes] god its getting old!

Tonight i'm picking a load of horses(well 2 lol) for my X-trainer. thats all she needs more horses [Duh]

the weathers awful though! it was snowing this mrning and nows it pouring rain, hopfully it doesnt get any colder or it will be snowing again, eekkk!

Remmie, he is so cute! He is definetly calling your name. He looks like a very nice horse. Do you have any pictures of the other one?

BQD - I'm glad you have Gatsby's best interests at heart, even if the tack store lady doesn't! You'll find the perfect saddle. And Gatsby will be so happy for it.

SG - When you quit that second job, it's going to feel like you've gone on vacation. Regular work will be easy after that.

I had a great ride on the ponies tonight. I hadn't ridden in over 3 weeks [Mad] due to a sinus infection, out of town visitors, the new job, the company picnic and school, so I expected them to be a little squirrely. Especially since it went from like 95 degrees a week ago to 36 degrees last night! [Eek!] Anyway, I longed them yesterday in side reins and they were really quiet. And they were even quieter tonight when I rode. Kind of weird, but really nice!

Ugh. Now I get to go do homework for the math class I missed last week.

Good morning everyone!!

I'm off to see the horses in a little while. I don't have pics of the Paso. I did talk to Cindy some more about the TWH. Ugh! She said it could take up to a year to get him to the point where he is comfortable (not petrified) of a rider/people although she has ridden him twice. She is a master of the problem horse though.

She was at an auction and walking around the trailers and found a guy beating this horse with a metal pipe while hidden between two trailers. She asked him what it would take to make him stop and she paid him $850.00 and took the horse. He had to have eye surgery the next day, so she has quite a bit of money into him. She has had him for 5 weeks. No wonder he is petrified of people.

I don't know guys. I feel sooo sorry for him and her reason for wanting me to take him is that she doesn't feel that most people could get him over the problem. Do I need to take that on? I really don't. But I feel so bad for him. She has to move him because she doesn't have room for him and her boarders are getting upset because they can't catch him to get access to the arena. He is living between the barn and the arena right now. One of the boarders has said that she is leaving if that horse is not gone by the 1st of the month. We'll see. Can my head overrule my heart here? That remains to be seen.

BQD: You are going in the right direction with the saddle fitter. Hope you find the right saddle quickly.

Inky: Hope Tadd does OK between now and his next diagnostic. That must be very worrying for you. and as to the animals. Those vet bills can drain us dry, can't they. Hope everyone is ok soon.

SG: You can only do soooo much. I'm sure your hubby wouldn't appreciate your being exhausted all the time. You did the right thing.

DQ: Hope your car problems get resolved soon. Typical that they all have problems at the same time.

Well, got to get ready to go. It's almost a three hour trip from here to Ocala, so I'll let you guys know what happens tomorrow. Ocala is tack store central so I don't expect to be back til the end of the day and I'll be penniless.

haha you sound like me!

ok so we picked uo those horses last night! how fun [Roll Eyes] it sucks hualing in cold weather!

so i got back to the barn about 8 and my new trainers was there. she brought out her Karl Niederuss saddle for me to try on Gatsby.i actually think it fit!!! [Eek!] i didnt sit in it but it looked so good! I'm gonna sit in it tonight and see. lately though somethings kinda been buggin me, i really dont think she likes Thoroughbreds/OTTBS. she always saying how whimpy and hot headed they are. thats just kinda bugs me i guess. Also Gatsby doesnt stand the best in cross ties and she said "why dont you hobble him, i wouldnt put up with that". ok thats resonable and i've been working on it but i mean she just expects her horses to stand perfectly still, whick ok is understandable but Gatsby just needs sometime to work on it ya. And yesterday he was very um.. excitable because he'd been in for 3 days straight and he had alot of energry and i was lunging him and he kept bucking and kicking. I dont think she likes Gatsby too much or just tbs in gerenral [Frown]

Bis, give her a little time and I bet she'll love Gatsby! How could anyone not? From how you describe him and the pictures you have posted, he looks so incredibly sweet! [big Grin]

Remmie, the horse in the picture is gorgeous. What a sad, sad story he has. [Frown] If you take him home, I bet he'll turn into one fine horse with time.

I actually have off today, because Santanna is getting his teeth floated. Boy do I need the day off and the relaxation of being around horses. I am beat and my legs are killing me after standing and working so much.

I still feel really guilty about putting in my notice at the pet store. They didn't help last night when they went on and on about how much they loved me, and then offered me a full-time position.

The new job is so far nothing like how they presented it to be, which is a little agitating.

And to further complicate things, the big company I interviewed with a while back now wants a second interview.

Why can't things be simple? [Confused]

Ok... let's see how badly I mangle this and get all confused....

Inky - AT least you have the kitty vet visit out of the way and over with. My dog LOVES the vet. I don't like it so much. Our last visit was for a copperhead bite, she got to stay overnight, get her legs shaved all pretty, had someone come pet her and fuss every 60 minutes, basically doggie-day camp. I got to part with $500.

BQD - Aww shucks... It sounds like you new trainer has high expectations of you and Gatsby. In some ways, it is encouraging that she has an interest in his behavior on the ground. Just keep in mind that he is your horse, and you get to make the decisions. Get to know her, let her get to know you and Gatsby. Be honest with her in terms of your goals and expectations, and expect the same from her. Hope that saddle works out.

SG - Work sucks. I suggest you go win the lottery. That would solve a lot of your problems. Jobs never seem to turn out to be what is advertised... it is a law or something I think.

deequeue - All my friends tell me to ride my horse to work whenever I complain about my transportation. Handy to have a rental place so close... I have a 100 mile round trip commute (ok, ok, it is 98 miles... sue me). I do it on a motorcycle... it has been dropping to the high 30's the last couple of days... kinda nippy.

Remmie - I hope one of the horses you look at today works out for you. You can't save them all... if the TWH is right for your family, then that is great, if not, well, you need to look after the ones that are already your responsibility. You know what you can take on and what you can't. [Wink]

Hmnmmmmm, who'd I miss?

Inky, I think you have a heart of gold taking care of all the animals and Tad as well!

SG, maybe the full time job at the pet store sounds more appealing, since the new job does not appear to be what they said. The big Co. is also very interested, if they want a 2nd interview.

Remmie, sounds like the TWH needs a chance, eh? My bet is you end up with him! [big Grin]

DQ, hope you get your cars figured out. I know how inconvenient that can be!

BQD, sounds like your new trainer just wants what is best for Gatsby and he does need to learn to stand still and have good ground manners, although I am not a fan of hobbles, I do believe there are other ways to teach a horse to stand quiet. But maybe she will turn out to be great at working with him on a lot of this stuff. Give her a chance, I bet it all works out!

I went to put my contact lens in this a.m. and somehow, someway I tore the right one! Fortunately had one more right lens left and need to make an eye appt. a.s.a.p. now.

Had my 2nd lesson with my new trainer yesterday. I really like her and she said she was pleased with how well I had done my homework! She is prepping me for the show and next week we are hauling over to the show grounds and have my lesson over there! I love how she gives me things to work on with my horse. Keeps me motivated!!

[bang Head][bang Head] Not how I wanted to wake up this morning. I have panic disorder so I get bad bad anxiety attacks, for the past year I've had them pretty much under control, but with the stress lately, my control has slowly been losing grip. So I woke up to nightmares and a lovely anxiety attack this morning. Took my lame Tadd to work. Last night was his first decent night of sleep in two days, he had only had 1-2 hours of sleep the previous nights. Now he can barely walk because of his back and he's incredibly sore.

Come back home to a lovely little pile of giant steaming dog "doo-doo" lack for a word I'd rather use right now. So I go clean that up. Attempt to relax a little bit since anxiety attacks take a lot out of me, then get up to get some breakfast. Step my barefoot into a hot huge puddle of urine from Chloe. So needless to say, my morning did NOT start out well [Crazy]

Remmie he definately is a beauty, though he sounds like he comes with his own little baggage of past problems. Good luck to you in deciding on what to do, whether you come back with him or not. I can't believe what some people will do to animals [Mad]

Wild Oaks, it sounds like you've been quite the busy one! Hope it all calms down for you soon [Huggy]

SG, with how the new job is going, do you think it would be better for you between finances and job security to stay on at the pet store full time, and take that second interview at the company you sent your resume to earlier?

BQD, give her some time, it usually takes a bit to get used to a horse [Wink] Glad to hear you finally at least found one saddle that fit him. When's the saddle fitter coming again?

DawnC, you did well. Glad I have never had to deal with snake bites here though. At least one of our good friends is well versed in the area of snakes (has fifteen in his house among other reptiles and pets)

Boocoo, the new trainer sounds great! Good luck at your show and be sure to share pictures [Wink] I've torn my contact lenses putting them in before as well, doesn't feel too great putting them in, then attempting to take them out as your eye tears up [Crazy]

BooCoo, your new trainer sounds super!

Inky, i'm sorry that you are having panic attacks. Stress can be so hard to deal with sometimes. [Huggy]

I have no clue what to do about the job situation. On the one hand I really am starting to get in the groove at the pet store and like what i'm doing there. On the other hand, my new job pays more and has better benefits--but I don't really like it as of yet. I thought i'd be working more with the disabled clients and was excited to have a job with a purpose, but it is so not what they said it would be. But then again is two days really enough of a chance to give a job? [Confused] And, then I don't know what to think about the big company that wants another interview.

Gah. I'm so tired from working 15 hours yesterday and monday that I can't think. And my hand hurts. I was cooking noodles and spilled boiling water all over it. And its all red and burning. [bang Head]

I think I'll jump in on this chit chat thing. I wanted to the last one but it was already about a hundred pages long [Crazy]

Good luck, Inky. I hope things go better for you.

Geez guys! And I thought I was busy!

Remmie, I loff the TWH. Def needs some saving.

Theres so much going on but I PROMISE I did read every post.

I do have good news. And no, I didnt save 15% on my car insurance by switching to Geiko. I went yesterday with my best friend Marla and Randy and checked out The Rivercity Brewing Company. I loved it. Was a little let down as the room with the vaulted ceilings was more for a cocktail party and the ballroom didnt have the BEST view of the river, but other than that, Im in love.

So WE HAVE A RECEPTION SITE! YAY. And its within our budget and the foods great. So whew. Now.. Where are we getting MARRIED????????

Im still sore from riding 2 days in a row. Geez. I am so out of shape. I think I am going to get a massage today if they have an opening before I get adjusted. Maybe that will make me feel better?

Hope everyones day looks up, esp you Inky!
