hot horses in stalls

Recommended Posts

My boy is in a stall at the trainers right now. And there has been several days he was soaking wet with sweat. I just took him to the round pin and let him roll around in the dirt for a few minutes. I dont know if it really helped to cool him off, but he sure seemed to be having a good time! [Crazy]

In Texas, we did this:

Horses in during the hot part of the day, out at night.

Big box fans on during the day.

Mister running all day.

Hosed off 3 times during the day and scraped.

Worked really well for us.

But, here in MI, that's not applicable for most of the summer. Rather, we get slammed with the heat for a few days--which really never gives the horses a chance to acclimate. So, during this last heat wave...

1) give salt in feed/electrolytes in feed

2) lots of water available

3) hose off as frequently as possible

I've found using fans as well as spraying the aisle with water helps. The fans are important anyways. Also, if you can hose your horse off at some point in time that'd help.
