Magnolia Estate - The Chance Of A Lifetime

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Magnolia Estate.

The South Carolina farm is owned by the Trotter family, home to them, their guests, and their wonderful array of show horses. The family is known for their showing success. Once a year, the family selects eight riders to come train with them at the estate. Their selection is based upon the riders' successes in smaller recognized horse shows in the area, such as the "C" shows and larger schooling shows. For an entire year, these eight riders will stay at the estate, ride with the Trotter team on the family's horses, and learn to show on the "A" circuit, all for free. Being invited to the Magnolia Estate is a huge honor. It's not all good news, though. The pressure is immense, the workload is difficult, and it's never easy to be away from your family for so long. But if you are willing to accept the challenge, it will pay off greatly.

The Mansion

A driveway flanked by live oaks leads the way to the Trotter mansion. The mansion is a somewhat modernized version of an old plantation home, built custom for the Trotters. It has eleven bedrooms to accommodate their two daughters, the eight guest riders, and the parents. When you are not riding or doing barn work, the mansion offers a billiards room and a private theater room. The large kitchen is open all day in case you get hungry, and dinner is served at exactly 8:30pm every night in the massive dining room by the kitchen staff.

The Barn

Just a short walk through the courtyard lies the barn. Complete with twenty stalls (each with a ceiling fan), four wash racks, office, tack room, feed room, and a luxurious lounge, the barn is the envy of many riders in the area. It is heated in the winter and the many ceiling fans keep it cool in the summer.

The Riding Facilities

Magnolia Estate offers an outdoor arena, an indoor arena, and a large hunt field. The outdoor arena is lighted and has an entire set of jumps. The indoor arena is also lighted, has jumps, and has a stereo system. The hunt field is adjacent to the outdoor arena for hunter derby practice. Around the entire estate, bridle paths and a trails link together and create a wonderful place to hack.

---So here's the deal... you've been invited by the Trotter family to spend an entire year at their farm, riding their horses, training with them, and showing the "A" circuit. You are only a "C" circuit rider thus far, so this is huge. You had no idea the family was even watching you until you received their letter. You will be assigned your own room in the mansion and an amazing horse to ride. While you are staying at the estate, you are allowed to go out and visit your family and friends, but only on weekends and they may not come visit you. Are you up to the challenge?

RULES::

-please be nice. :)

-remember: you are a C circuit rider. you are not a riding god.

-no PP, GM, MS, etc

-be literate.

-no one-liners, make your posts worth reading, 100 word minimum.

-let us know if you're leaving.

-stay active.

-use OOC when 'talking' out of character.

Rider;;

Full Name: Clara Layner

Age: 17

Gender: female

Personality: Clara is the girl that walks into the barn with a giant smile plastered on her face, even if it?s raining or she had a horrible ride. She is a rather bubbly teen, chatting and just kicking back in the lounge accounting for most of her time at the barn off horseback. One thing Clara is known for is her completely unnecessary lack of confidence when she rides. Though she has been in the saddle for almost seven years, she feels like everyone is better than her, even the tiny six year olds who can barely sit still in the saddle. Hates jumping because of a fall she took almost two years ago, but she doesn?t show it. She takes on any course hiding all her fears behind her perfectly white smile.

No matter what he?s doing, he manages to attract a following of little children, being the ?teen idol? of the barn; the riders often joking he needs his own fan club.

Everybody READ:

-Okay, so here's the deal. We're only missing one member, so we'll work that into the story like he/she declined the invitation. I'll play both the trainers, Mrs. Sarah-Catharine Trotter (equitation) and Mr. Gregory Trotter (hunters).

-Meredith and Raine are the daughters.

-Alright, here's how we'll begin. You were picked up by one of the Trotters' private drivers. He hands you an envelope with another letter from the Trotters inside. It will tell you what room you are in and what horse you have been assigned (the horse you put in your stats). Your riding trunks are already here outside the horse's stall, but you have your personal baggage.

-Your first post will begin as the driver turns into the Trotter driveway (it's long and pretty, like a plantation).

Have Fun!!

Meredith

Green eyes stared intently at the driveway out the kitchen window. Meredith Trotter got so excited whenever the new riders came. Sure, she'd miss the riders from the year before, but they almost always stayed in touch and she saw them at the shows. New people were just so exciting.

Meredith had wolfed down an omelet and a half, egg and cheese only as always, and was now sitting at the breakfast bar. She was excited for the riders to meet their assigned horses. Meredith had ridden all of them and helped train most of them, and of course she took a part in owning them, so it always made her proud when the riders oohed and awed over her beloved equines.

"I'm going down to the barn," she announced, jumping off her stool and walked across the house to the back room. Her beloved Der Dous clicked quietly on the hardwood, giving away her position in the house. "Call me if you need me!" she shouted before slipping out the back door and walking across the fagrant, flower-covered courtyard. In just a few minutes, she arrived at the Trotter Stable. While munching on their morning grain, a few horses let out low nickers. From the first stall on the left, however, came a loud whinny. "Good morning, girl," Meredith said, a smile across her face, as she stepped into Story's stall. The huge flaxen mare had finished her grain and was nosing her hanging Jolly Ball, her signal that she wanted her hay. Meredith gave Story a pat and stepped out of the stall as one of the stablehands came in with two flakes of alfalfa.

After saying hello to all the horses and one pony, Meredith entered the lounge. She grabbed an apple juice from the refrigerator and sat down in one of the comfortable chairs, flicking on the TV. This is where she came if she ever just wanted to be alone.

--

Elizabeth-Ann

Elizabeth-Ann Cox sat in the back seat of the black sedan, reading over the letter for the eightieth time. She still couldn't believe she was here. "We're here," the driver said in a gruff voice, as if he'd said that too many times for his liking. Elizabeth-Ann looked out the window and her jaw dropped. On either side of the long drive were huge live oaks and behind them, pastures spread out like a blanket over the South Carolina landscape. Ahead lie a beautiful craftsman style home, no doubt the Trotter Mansion. "Wow," Lizzie breathed, sticking the letter in the pocket of her Ariat breeches. Only a few more moments and she'd be meeting the infamous Trotter family.

--

Sarah-Catharine

Mrs. Trotter had been sitting in front of the computer when Meredith had ran out. She wished she would have gotten her before the door shut. Pulling out her cell phone, she called her daughter and told her the first car was coming down the drive. After hanging up, Mrs. Trotter slipped on her worn tall boots, checked her hair in a mirror, and stepped out onto the porch, followed by Mr. Trotter.

Meredith bounded up the side-steps and slid to a stop next to her parents, catching her breath.

Adalia's jaw stood slacked as she literally drooled over the large property. The driver chuckled as she continued to stare and gasp when they passed the house and she saw the barn. Her memory flashed back to a few days ago when she had gotten the letter in the mail explaining what had happened, she was running around her apartment screaming and jumping up and down in excitement and now she was really there.

"This place is magnificent." Adalia commented when the driver came to a complete stop in front of the huge house. Adalia was dressed in her old breeches and her worn out tall boots, she spent all her money on her riding and had a pair of breeches to work the barn in, another pair to take lessons in and then her prized breeches that only saw the light of day when she was showing. She hoped all of her clothes were in pristine condition, but didn't doubt that a family that was this highly ranked would just throw things around. Adalia thanked the driver and mentally braced herself as she opened to door and took her first step out onto the Trotter's land with a large smile on her face.

Elizabeth-Ann had just stepped out the car when Adalia arrived. Lizzie wore her favorite On Course breeches, her tired Ovation tall boots, and a clean white polo. Her deep brown hair hung around her shoulders and framed her face. It had been fine on the plane here from Raleigh, North Carolina, but was now beginning to stick to her neck in the heat. Great, I'm going to look like a sweaty mess, she thought, standing there quietly with her plaid luggage at her side. Despite her discomfort, Elizabeth-Ann wore a beautiful white smile and silently greeted Adalia with a nod.

Raine had been awake for hours, much like her sister she was excited to see the new riders that came. She would like some, hate others. That was just her. She stuffed down an omlet like her sister but hers had cheese, bacon and mushrooms in it. It was her favorite. A black and white striped polo hugged her torso. She then wore a pair of tan ovation breeches and had her ovation, shined, tall boots on with her short spurs on the back. She sighed as she called "goin' to the barn, I have my cell if you need me". She opened the door and closed it as she left the house and headed down to the barn. She knew she was going to be working with her horse Poet this year, she liked the mare, and had helped in training her but she was the last horse she would have chosen to ride. However if Poet did anything for her she would make her a better rider and they would grow a bond which was Raine's goal ever since the mare was started, Poet was a game player and Raine itched to play it. "Poet" she called as she walked up to the stall.

Poet lifted her head and looked to her. She was shined up and had no dirt on her anywhere, the odd shaving piece in her tail and fetlocks but that was about it. Raine leaned on the stall gate and looked to her "Guess we're team mates this year love" she said sweetly. Raine hated it when people didn't acknowledge their horse as working just as hard as the rider. Poet nickered as she poked her nose at Raine and perked her ears. She couldn't play any games or throw tricks at her while she was in her stall so she was taking the girl for what she was worth now. Raine heard a car pull out and walked outside seeing her sister and standing beside her. "I hope we get as good a group as we had last year" she commented as she watched the girl step out.

- - - -

Justin was outside feeding, he was picky and careful about where each horse was fed and how much. This was his second year working here, and his second year riding. He was excited, he got to work with the horse he had admired forever. Simon. The horse was much like Justin and he admired him. As he worked he was happy, he never took this job for granted and worked to his full power. He was out front when the car drove up carrying one of the new riders. He saw the trotter girls standing and watching so he smiled and walked past them, he had work to do and knew that he would be in a bit of trouble if he stopped to gab while horses needed tending to.

Matt yawned an extremely large yawn that revealed his perfect set of teeth. Stretching up slightly, he rested against the broom he was using to sweep the aisle for a moment. He was way more interested in the new arrivals than in doing his chores. Most of his morning work was nearly done, all he had left to do was muck his portion of the stalls. His liquid brown eyes were filled with intelligence and a hint of amusement already. As the day increased, the amusement would only become more prominent.

Flicking his light brown hair from his eyes with a flick of his neck, he resumed sweeping. As he moved the large broom down the covered aisle, he noticed Justin doing his chores and nodded his chin in greeting. With all intentions of riding at some point, his riding clothes were in his truck, but at the moment he simply wore a pair of faded jeans; it was much too hot for a shirt.

As he passed Bee's stall, the dark mare stuck her head out and snorted a greeting. She was still mad at him for the late workout the night before. He'd gotten distracted and had only had time to ride her when she was supposed to be eating. She'd eaten later of course, but she still wasn't a happy camper. He patted her toned neck with ease and promised her a few carrots later in the day.

Finishing his sweeping, Matt grabbed the mucking equipment, and went into the first stall.

-----

Sawyer's nearly black eyes were completely invested in the book that sat in his hands. The faded copy of Catcher in the Rye was helping to ease his jumbled stomach. The driver was watching him with slight amusement, he was the first kid to not attempt to take everything in all at once. Sawyer could feel eyes on him, and lifted his up slightly. That was when he noticed that they were finally there.

His attire was casual, definitely made for travelling, jeans and a black Aerosmith shirt. When he looked around and realized that everyone was already in their riding clothes, he felt slightly mortified. Whoops. He hadn't realized they were supposed to come dressed, something just felt silly about showing up in a pair of breeches.

His inability to make conversation was obvious as he toed the outside of the group that was forming.

Peyton's eyes ran over the jaw-dropping scenery as the car made it's way up the driveway. She had been lucky enough to get a friendly driver, and they had made easy converstaion on the way from the airport. "It's stunning.." she breathed.

"You'll get used to it.." The driver chuckled. He had obviously driven many other young riders, and he was used to the way they acted when they first drove up the Trotter's driveway.

Peyton felt slightly out of place when she saw the other riders though. Most of them had arrived in their riding clothes, and she, on the other hand, was wearing her favorite pair of black skinny jeans and a bright yellow t-shirt. A scarf and beret completed the look. She would have fit in with her froup of friends back at home, but here was different.

Regardless of what she was wearing, she was still extremely excited to meet her fellow riders, and she stepped out of the car confidently and made her way over to the group of other teenagers. Her usual smile and casual attitude made her easy to approach.

Callie leaned back into the drivers car, watching endless acres of land role by. Looking up as the driver started to slow down, she rolled the window down. What lay to her eyes was the jaw-dropping scenery before her. This is were i'm riding now?, thought to myself. I gasped seeing the house i was now staying at also. Thinking back to hearing my mother call me into the kitchen with a letter adressed to me. Then to come to find out i had been accepted into the huge riding program at Madnolia Estate. More to me i was exicted to thrilled to have the chance to learn here more about hunter. Feeling the car slow to a stop i got ready to meet everyone here now.

Seeing the driver open the door, i steped out into the warm sunshine. Taking in the land around, i smiled. This place was the bomb realy. Glancing down to what she had on, a worn pair of jeans, and a aero. polo. Then back to the other riders who had one riding close. I laughed to myself. Then spotting another girl 'Peyton' who had regular clothes also. Smiling at the driver i headed up to everyone. Ready to face what was to come, and ready to ride.

Clara was in a terrible mood as the man pulled into the drive. Her flight out of Orlando had been delayed, which probably meant she would be late to the whole grand event that was taking place. ?I hate to be rude, but you can just go a hundred down this road, I?m probably already late.? She said with a smile, trying to make the words come off as a joke, even though Clara was ready to get out and run if he didn?t pick up the pace.

They pulled to the front of the house and Clara wasted on time on exiting the car and pulling her two bags out of the car with her. She ran as fast as she could through to where the group was meeting. Finally, all her years of cheerleading and riding helped with the long haul across the yard to the front of the large house. Her worn tall boots made a comfy squeak as she positioned herself near the center of the riders, slightly out of breath and sweating already, Clara wanted to exclaim about her flight delay and open up to all the riders. She decided against the plan and quietly tried to catch her breath.

Meredith smiled at her sister as Raine took her place beside her. "Me too," she whispered before returning her attention to the growing group of riders. She was puzzled to see that many of them had not come dressed to ride, but then again that hadn't been in the letter. The group grew quickly and Meredith counted the assembled riders. Only six. One was missing, since the eighth had declined the invitation.

Greg Trotter smiled warmly at the group of young equestrians before him. He was a relatively tall man, about six feet two inches, with very tan skin and dark brown hair. Green eyes highlighted his perfectly white smile. "Good afternoon, riders," he greeted them loudly. "I am Greg Trotter, and this is my wife Sarah-Catharine and two daughters, Meredith and Raine. Welcome to Magnolia Estate. Or should I say, your new home."

Sarah-Catharine also smiled at the riders, taking over when Greg had finished speaking. "We're so happy to see you all. I understand that some of you have had very long trips today. Please come inside and take your luggage into your rooms. After you change into your riding clothes, the maid will show you to the living room. Be there in twenty minutes, please." With that, Mrs. Trotter put her hands together and turned to open the front door.

A maid stood in the foyer, ready to show the group of riders to their private hallway.
