My Poor Slinky Hurt Himself!

Recommended Posts

Today I had him turned out in the arena and all the barrels were laying down. He came flat out running down the arena, went around one barrel then tried to jump another length wise. He got 3/4 of the way over the barrel landed and flipped the barrel up some how with his back leg and caught it on his other. I thought he was fine until he started limping a bit and I saw blood! I freaked out started cussing and mad at myself for not picking up the barrels sooner. I thought he would be okay so I did a betadine scrub and peroxide and cold hosed it. I noticed I could see his cannon bone and ligaments.

I called the vet and he came out a few hours later. He said Slinky was lucky the way he hit it and that he didn't cut his tendon. He just "degloved" the two tendons that are attached to each other. So he's on 4 - 5 week rest with me changing the bandages once a day for 5 days then 3 times a week after that. So far his first day of antibiotics went well. <img src="http://forums.horsecity.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/grin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="grin.gif" />

Oh my goodness!! Poor Slinky!!! I am glad he is "okay" (I know this doesnt make you feel better, but...) it could have been much worse. I hate it when things like that happen....you think they will be fine and not bother something...however it always seems that is the first thing they go to. I am sorry X!! That really stinks!! Good luck with you healing process!!! [Angel]

Oh yah, That's bad. [Huggy] [Huggy] [Angel]

Had a pony run across the street year ago and the car stopped but the pony's leg got caught right behind the bumper and as the car stopped it lurched forward, then back and cut right into the upper arm. Same thing; I could see ligaments. One was severed. It did get 32 stitches on the outside but since I pulled the skin over, after sticking the ligament ends together, and wrapped it; he didn't need stitches inside. He was perfectly sound after it healed.

Nasty wound. You are lucky it is not worse.

In the future, I would not use hydrogen peroxide in a wound. My Vet has told me that it is very bad about damaging good tissue and delaying healing. He said to just through it away as he did not use it for anything.

Sorry about that injury! Just wanted to share that we just had a tendon deep cut on a front leg, which is quite prone to developing proud flesh. The vet gave us a new product to use as an anti-biotic/anti-proud flesh treatment. It is called equaid and you can get it through your vet or on line. It has worked BEAUTIFULLY for her - her leg is going to heal without any proud flesh and look great. The cost was about $38 for a small container that lasted for her entire 4-6 weeks of rest and recovery, you just need to add a few drops of water if it gets dry.

Hey, how is Slinky feeling today?

Thanks for asking

Slinky appears to be in good spirits. Honestly seeing him in such a "normal" mood is making this injury better for me (as silly as that sounds). He is still perky and alert. His appetite and water consumption is the same as normal. The base of his hock is a bit swollen but everything else seems normal. He took his antibotics today with A&M like a champ, he actually whinnied for his bucket. He also gets "physical therapy" by walking to the wash rack and back to change his bandages. So, far all is great. I'll be taking pictures of his wound daily. Once again, thank you for asking!

Oh, that looked bad, but looks better already in the latest photo. Leg wounds are the pits. Hope he continues to be good about treatment and heals quickly. [Huggy]

Sorry to bug with the questions, I just want to be sure that I will be ordering the right product. All I found was the "Invacare Non-Adherent Sterile Guaze Dressing" it also says it's comparable to Kendall Telfa pad.

Hoo-boy! You weren't kidding about graphic pics! I only just now saw this and day 2 already looks better. Where is this on his leg? A back leg, just below the hock and sort of front/side?

You know ... don't beat yourself up about him hitting the barrels. I have a few stacks of RR ties and another of peeler-poles in the horse's pasture area. I figure if she can't manage to work her way around these known obstacles, then she isn't gonna be very useful as a trail horse. It sounds like he was just excited to be out and running and made a mis-calculation. It's gonna happen, but I bet in the future, he jumps bigger or goes around. *wink*

BTW, *great* photos capturing all the details!

Tomorrow I will get a picture of his whole leg for you guys. But for now, it's on his left hind leg just below his hock. It's on the front of his cannon bone.

it might look like there is a bit of proudflesh starting but can't really tell. The easiest way to tell is if when you look at it from the side and the skin is out and away from the wound.

Oh geez! I *knew* the wound pics looked bad, but they didn't really 'bother' me, they were a wound, you know? ... supposed to look like a wound ... but when I saw the pic showing his whole leg and where the wound was, it made me shudder in sympathy!

fwiw, I think it looks like it's healing pretty good.

Thanks guys for the support, prayers and information!

Here are pictures from the last couple days. Yesterday started the days of the bandage staying on for 2 - 3 days at a time.

Day 4:

Day 5 - I called the vet because there was hair in his wound, so he told me to unwrap it, wash it with water and re-wrap again.

Day 6 - Washed it off again since there was hair again. Today starts it being wrapped longer than over night. Will be changing on day 8.

Well, today is day 8! The wound is looking pretty good. It appeared to have some puss this morning so I did as the vet said and washed it off. I also noticed that Slinky's leg was BLOWN up, like it's horrible and totally heated up. I hosed it off and walked him around for a few minutes and it didn't do to much for it. I went ahead and rewrapped it and called the vet. The vet said it's most likely cause I put the vet wrap on too tightly and when I go back to the barn I have to un-wrap it -sigh-, cold hose it for a while then take him for a walk. If it doesn't go down I have to call him back. Anyways...on to the pictures!

Swollen leg!

A "good" picture of Slinky.

Did the vet say anything about the swelling today?

Poor Slinky and poor you! [Huggy] [Angel] I know you're giving him the best of care. [Not Worthy]

I did what the vet said and cold hose then took him for a 1/2 hour walk. Swelling came down a LITTLE bit but his wound looked DISGUSTING!!! I re-washed it and then rewrapped it. We'll see what it looks like tomorrow.

Minor decrease in swelling....

On Thursday I have to go make a payment on my bill *ouch* so I'm going to bring these pictures to the vet and see what he says about Slinky's healing. So far he's been just answering my questions over the phone, which is very kind of him! LOL!

looks like there mioght be something going on in there. Ask him about proud flesh cause from the last few pics, it looks like there is some starting. ask for equiade if there is. scooters leg did that swelling thing too. But hers was more like on day 2.

hope he keeps getting better.

Daphne - Those were the pictures I was going to primarily ask about since they look so "abnormal" from the others after going for the walk. I will ask about Equiade like you said too. Thanks for the heads up!!
