My Time Here Is Over

Recommended Posts

I am not questioning admin and I am not trying to stir up trouble. I am however taking advice that has been so rudely pointed out in another post.

I don't like what's going on here at HC. I feel like if I happen to post something that isn't agreed with or not liked then I will be banned. I don't like that feeling, so it is time for me to find another sandbox to play in. After all this is a private site and no one is holding a gun to my head to stay here.

This decision isn't a knee jerk reaction to one poster being banned or one poster being smacked on the wrist. This is the accumulation of actions taken over a while now.

I know what it is like to be admin on a site. I know it is a lot of hard work and I also know that you can't always make the popular decision. That is why I haven't said anything in the past. Now, however I feel like it is time to speak up. I also know that banning out of the blue and then being rude to posters over small things is not a way to keep a site open. Yes, this is a private site, but we the posters and lurkers are the ones that keep it going.

I hope that HC can carry on and flurish. I will miss coming here in the mornings with my first cup of coffee and catching up. I will miss the support that I have gotten here, but most of all I will miss the knowledge I have gained from my years here.

I also hope that while HC is working hard to get the posters and crowd that they want, they keep in the back of their mind that they are alienating many posters that have a lot to share.

I am on facebook, so if anyone wants to contact me feel free to contact me there.

im going to have to go with millie...i dont post often so i wont be missed. but i do come here every day several times a day to read. im not best buddies with anyone here, but i sure have noticed that only the fluffy posts seem to be ok here recently. i am a realist. i know its not all butterflies and roses. i guess i want to be able to have discussions that arent monitored to the point of only being allowed to spew cotton candy comments. i hope HC doesnt regret losing so many of the older posters. they provided the backbone that drew me here to read.

I'm so sorry to see you go. I love your opinions and I love following your kids, but I also understand your feeling.

I am a level headed person... I don't do the knee jerk response, but it IS getting a little ridiculous around here and I'm spending less and less time here. HC, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

I think I just accidentally deleted someone elses post.... I tried deleting my twitchy eyed face and it popped up an error message and now Wild Rose's post is gone too.

Wild Rose, I didn't mean to!

Sorry to see anyone go however..... I am going to have to say thank you to all the admins and mods. It is a tough job especially with a group of mostly women and raging opinions. While I do miss some of those that have been banned I also feel that they were given plenty of warning to let things lay before the banning and did not take heed therefore they actually banned themselves.

Don't worry, you didn't delete mine. I did. I chickened out, thinking I was being rude.

millie, and barrelracinpie, if you feel you want to leave, then leave. This has happened many times over the years. Someone gets banned, and the troops jump in and say, "I'm leaving!" ....around and around we go...

Those who were banned, were banned for good reason. Some people get all up in arms about it, and some don't. Such is life.

I'm not trying to be rude. This happens over and over.

.........I don't think ANYONE wants to see a place end up being rice pablum with no genetic or opinionated diversity. That would be ho-hum BORING !!

However I'm having this strong urge to ditto Penny.

If one would imagine that it is ever a single isolated incident that gets a person sent down the road - I think they would be mistaken......well barring if you want to post nekkid pictures or something.

I would also be willing to bet a fairly substantial sum of money on the premise that people are adequately warned - perhaps not in public - but yes warned - advised - told - not once - but SEVERAL times if there is a problem. Barring again (cough cough) the posting nekkid pictures.

IMO

I think it's a shame that people were banned and I will miss them and I also think it's a shame that people are leaving.

I have though noticed a serious increase in the amount of topics getting locked and deleted and people getting banned.

Both the posters and the moderators have their reasons and I'm going to keep my mouth shut either way BUT, I will say that we do need to realize we did agree to a certain set of rules and that we need to follow them

Moderators: could you do me a favor and maybe post what your definition of the rules is? Maybe be a little more specific?

I realize the people who have gotten banned, I guess had warning and were seasoned members but I think to a new person the sudden banning doesn't look very good...

So if you could maybe do a post explaining topics and things that are NOT allowed that would be great, Maybe pin it up there with the whole "How Far Away Are We" post? So that when people say inappropriate things you can just say something like "See Topic: "Insert Name Here""

Just a thought..

I sure don't live in fear of being banned. I say some unpopular things, but I would never live in fear of being banned. If I'm asked to leave, then so be it. Most likely, I deserved the dismissal.

Yes, we've seen a LOT of members go over the years and yet HC is still here.

All I know is..... I'm going camping in October! yay!

I normally don't say anything in these situations and I tend to lay low here...but I must agree that lately HC feels unfriendly. I understand that there is a lot going on behind the scenes and that the mods and Admins have a hard job that requires a lot of thankless work. But I also feel that though we are but lowly "regular" members here, we should be allowed to have an opinion as well, provided it is expressed in a polite, mature, and respectful way.

So I'm going to try and be careful how I say this, because I mean no disrespect; however I don't think that I (or anyone else) should be silenced and prevented from giving our input for fear of those in higher positions. To say that no one is putting a gun to our heads and forcing us to come here is absolutely right-it's a testament to the environment here that we WANT to come here and enjoy our friends and the little community we've created.

There are people here that are extremely colorful and multi-dimensional and people who have become close friends. The different personalities here is what makes Horsecity OUR community. Though some people may be a bit crass and others at some times rude, the majority of the time we can forgive these minor transgressions and move on with our lives. Even those people who offend me at times or whose opinions I don't agree with provide me with enjoyment, simply because of who they are and what they contribute to this community. It's familiar and comfortable and to take away those people who make it that way just seems to take the the breath out of what makes these forums alive.

While I can understand and respect the fact that we are but "guests in this house," as well as fully appreciate the fact that we enjoy free membership here, it is unfair and hurtful to insinuate that for every member who leaves there is another "replacement" who is just the same. Because it's not the same-maybe to some people a member is a member is a member, but to me and many others, a member is a FRIEND, and a friend in their entirety of personality and spirit cannot be replaced. Though this is an internet forum and it's certainly not life or death, there are real live people behind these computer screens, and one is not equivalent to the next. Each of us is unique and when someone leaves, for whatever reason, they are missed by many and a piece of what makes Horsecity the wonderful commmunity it is has been erased.

I just feel like...with statements such as "If you dont like it here, then go. There are lots of members signing up often to take the place of the ones that feel the need to leave.", that makes me as a member her at Horsecity feel worthless here. Are we members really that disposable to the mods and admins? That if we were to leave, oh well, someone else will come along? That if we have a difference of opinion, we are not allowed to respectfully voice our side of things and are instead escorted out the door? The members on this forum ARE Horsecity. Our frequent presence here allows for the earning of advertising dollars. Our collective pool of knowledge has bettered the lives of many horses and the people who love them. And I refuse to believe that we members, each a living, breathing part of this community, are unimportant to its survival.

I get that we are supposed to unquestioningly submit to whatever actions the mods or admins choose to make based upon whatever reasons they do or do not give us. I've not said a word about any of the more recent happenings and this isn't about that. It's about the cavalier attitude I feel is being taken towards the members who give this forum life. It's not that I don't like it here, so to say "if you don't like it then leave" does not really apply. I love it here. I've made friendships that have carried over into real life, I've found people to talk to no matter WHAT I need to talk about, and I've learned more than I could ever put into words. Horsecity is important to me, and that's why I feel that it's important to keep the lines of communication open and keep the conversation flowing, rather than shutting each other down.

I referenced in this post some things that were said in the locked thread, so if there's any confusion, that's where it's from. Millie, I'm sorry to see you go. I really enjoy hearing about you and your kids, but I understand where you're coming from.

Let me make something clear. I am not standing up for anyone that is banned. The person that is banned is an adult and they know how to fight their own battles.

I didn't make this decision lightly nor did I make it to "feel the love" I made it to state my opinion.

It isn't just the banning that I see going on. It is some comments that have been made by those that are supposed to keep the rules, but while making those comments sound worse than the ones that are banned.

So, I'm off to find my sandbox.

I know there are some that will miss Bumper. I will say that I did agree with her on pretty much all of her dog stuff.

So in respect for Bumper, I always like her response to these threads.

Check out the WP thread on debate board. That could be the reason.

Regardless, "i'm leaving!" threads are childish. If someone wants to leave, just...leave.

What? Even mods can have a bad day and say something snarky gheesh. And again I am quite sure that more things happen behind the scenes than the everyday member realizes.

For me personally, it's not about when someone has a bad day and says something snarky. It's not about the things that go on behind the scenes. I think we're all pretty clear on that and understand that things DO go on behind the scenes and that people DO have bad days. What I've taken recent issue with is the attitude that the members here are replaceable and are of no value to the forums and are supposed to be robots who unquestioningly accept questionable treatment, and who run the risk of being banned if they so much as voice their opinion about what's happening in a community that they help create and that they are an integral part of.

I agree with you Ellie. We ARE valuable. If we all just up and left that wouldn't be good for their site now would it? Because I guarantee you that a lot of their business is because of our referrals and services we ourselves use.

Take care of your customers. Yeah we have free forum memberships but I've paid to have a classifieds ad on here before... heck, I've bought horses from ads on here. So am I worthless?

I think that members need to obey the rules they agreed to, and be mature about voicing their opinions.

I like this:

CHAT ROOMS AND FORUMS

HorseCity.com wants to encourage an open exchange of information and ideas. But we cannot and DO NOT REVIEW postings made in the chat rooms, forums, or other public posting areas. You may well read any given posting before anyone on the HorseCity.com staff does. Take what you find with a grain of salt. You can expect these areas to include information and opinions from a variety of individuals and organizations other than HorseCity.com.

Well, crud, I missed that memo where I'm supposed to be a boring robot just drolly posting boring material. I've never wondered if my wack-a-do posts are going to get me banned, because I don't spend my time thumbing my nose at the rules trying to see what I can get away with.

The admins here don't strike me as EVIL beings bent on smiting down on us. I'm sure that the the people who have been banned have had ample warnings in the past to curb their behaviors, and have probably thumbed their noses at the warnings as well.

Baylady. Here is a link to the HC rules.

http://forums.horsecity.com/index.php?showtopic=47036405

Warning meters aren't always being used, there seems to be lack of communication from admin to members and admin isn't always consistent. Things will slide for a long time and then admin comes in out of the blue and cracks down. It may seem very clear on your end, but it's not coming through on this end. And it's certainly not working.

I know many of us would be far more open and aware, if you would publicly warn at the time if an unnacceptable comment is made.
