Ride Or Drive 1St & When To Start?

Recommended Posts

I have a Barockpinto (paint/Friesian) 18 month old colt. Would it be better for his bones(less stress on them) to ride or drive first & what would a minimum age be? Thinking very basic light 2 wheeler if driving.

Being a friesian cross I would drive first. I may be wrong but I've heard they are slower to physically mature. Plus driving will lay a lot of the groundwork for riding later.

I would drive him first. We started our Friesian driving when he was 2 years old. Put the first very short ride on him at 3 years old. I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get him under saddle. He can learn a whole lot in driving that will lay the way for work under saddle.

If I can drive him like a normal horse, I have no reason to ride him for a long time. But what's worse for him..trotting on mainly asphalt roads behind a light cart or being ridden on mainly dirt trails?
