syl Report post Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) Well I thought we were done our foaling season but had a surprise package this morning in the paddock !! Found this lil girl tottering around this morn, story goes... I saw momma advertised June 24, looked rather round then, owners said she had foaled 3 weeks earlier and foal was alive but was later kicked by another horse and died so they wanted to get rid of the mare. Mare supposedly 9-10 yrs old and was never broke, they thought she was too old to break. I got her and spent a couple weeks getting her started, saddled, bridled, lunged, backed and ridden at walk in arena, then got busy with hay season and vacation so mare put to pasture for few weeks, brought her in last week and she was huge. emailed old owner and they still insisted not possible for her to be in foal. OK, called vet to check for other possibilities, tumor, cyst? some sort of hernia?? but still was suspicious as to being pregnant, Vet was to be here yesterday but postponed till Monday, well guess now I have my answer, lol first pic at about an hour old Filly is currently named Charlie (charlie horse) by my husband but have already had several inquiries about purchasing her so she may be renamed when she sells unless we decide to keep her ;) . last photo is 24 hours old :) Edited August 27, 2012 by syl

lonesomeequus Report post Posted August 27, 2012 Very nice surprise! Did they get the mare confused with another, lie, or what? How odd. Mama is pretty as well. Congratulations! A question because I'm a baby newb. In the second pic of her, is the stance on her back feet because she's only an hour old, and she'll grow/strengthen out of it? syl Report post Posted August 27, 2012 first, the previous owners have a bunch of mares (and several stallions :/ I'm guessing a foal was born in the herd, maybe to a first time mom or ??? and this mare being very friendly and easy going was who the foal bonded with so owners figured it was hers. They said shortly after another mare kicked and killed the foal so they wanted to ditch the mare. I took her in as a project mare to train and resell but wondered as she got rather large this last month. 3 separate times the last owners insisted that there was no way this mare could be pregnant let alone due now. and second, yes foals often have lux ligaments at birth, sometimes lasting only couple hours or even couple days. in extreme cases splinting may be necessary but with this filly by couple hours she was strong and standing great and normal. Pretty amazing feat if you think about it, being an hour old and learning to walk already. :)

N4L Report post Posted September 13, 2012 How is the baby (and her Mom) doing?
syl Report post Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) Charlie is doing great, plan on putting her momma back in training next week now that baby is big enough to go alongside. she's very tall compared to our QH and Paint babies, gonna be tall like her sire. We just sold one more of our foals so now she only has my keeper 4 month old to play with here she is from today in pasture Edited September 13, 2012 by syl

SerahRose Report post Posted September 13, 2012 she is CA YUTEEEEEEE! So you do know who her sire is? Able to get her registered? What did the mare's previous owners have to say!!?? LOL
syl Report post Posted September 13, 2012 (edited) Having seen the 3 stallions they had I have no doubt the sire is the 16.3 Thoroughbred, she has his head/ears and height, the paint studs were under 15hh and she doesnt look anything like them. havent heard back from previous owner not that they'd really care either way. Though the sire is registered the mare is not so no way of registering other than pinto which would have no real benefit as there are no pinto shows around here. next pic gives a better idea of height, she's not quite 3 weeks old yet Edited September 13, 2012 by syl

syl Report post Posted October 29, 2012 thanks serah, Charlie (yes she's a she) is 2 months old and growing fast, almost as tall as my 5 1/2 month paint. She's shedding out baby hair and putting on winter coat at same time so hard to get "pretty" pics when she's fuzzy patchy. but here is an updated pic from this weekend. and one of her with her mom who is a bit over 15hh and my other paint filly to give you size idea at this time
