Copays At The Doctors....do You Pay?

Recommended Posts

Oh the joys of medical billing. Do not miss that! Do miss the patients though.

I have a few patients I'd miss. But others will be glad not to deal with!

I don't have a co-pay for my insurance so I usually get billed. My chiropractor's office prefers if you pay that day, and they know how much it will be after the negotiated rate with the insurance so I'm fine with it. However, I had to take my son to a dermatologist. They wanted all payment up front. I don't really mind paying up front, but I was not expecting to since I am always billed and I have no co-pay. I put it on my credit card. They said if there was a difference in what I was billed and what the negotiated rate with the insurance was then they would refund the money. No problem. WELL, they didn't say it would take 6+ weeks to get my money back! I figured after the insurance came back with the information they would credit my credit card. No. They waited until they actually received payment from the insurance company, then cut me a check! It stunk because it was on my credit card and I had to pay the full amount or get charged interest. It just ticked me off because it was $50.00. You know if I had owed them additional money for the visit they would have charged me the next day. But if I am owed money then I have to wait 6+ weeks.

We used to have a 15 dollar co pay for office visits, and 40 dollars for emergency room. No deductible, though. We either paid right then, or they billed us.

Now I'm on Medicare and my supplemental health insurance has no co pays and no deductible.

A $20-$50 copay is different than hundreds or thousands in ER/hospital stays. My dentist waits for ins payment, then bills me the difference. That's their policy. OP says they have a new policy--pay your copay at time of visit. Most offices I have been to or worked for ask for copay up front.

I can make a doctors appointment, walk in, and not pay a dime.

I can go to the walk in clinic, and leave, without paying a dime.

I can go to the emergency room, get treated, and leave, and not pay a dime.

I LOVE my insurance... Wait, we all have that. I LOVE being Canadian.

There have been times I was too broke to put the gas in my car to drive the 3 miles to the hospital. Yet, too sick to not get seen by a doctor. What if you can't afford insurance, and get seriously injured? Your screwed. You shouldn't have to ask people to borrow money, or scrounge up every dime you have, to pay to see a doctor. Your(collective, for the US) healthcare system needs some SERIOUS work.

Oh, just recently, I had an abcessed tooth and wisdoms that needed to come out. I didn't have the money for the dentist, but it was emergent. Hospital gave me antibiotics and pain meds, and I went and talked to social services. They covered my dentist visit, and surgery, virtually no questions asked. I was more than grateful for THAT.

At the lady doctors, I never had to pay a co pay, just got a bunch of bills in the mail, now at the pediatrician, just to have a weight check on the baby, $20 co pay.

YEP!

UP FRONT, and several signs to the effect that you will NOT be seen if not paid. Mine is only $20, for office, $30 for specialist, ( and I need two!), or $100 for hospital/emergency.
